====================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome 152 new subscriber who joined list since last issue.

Last week my daughter (5 grader) invited me to her class to talk about my
work. So I went there and decided to take apart computer and display some
of its  major components. Presentation was a hit. Everybody wanted to
help me to disassemble old  386 and I had to answer lots of questions
when showing memory chips, floppy , harddrive and CPU. But there was one
question which got me thinking. It wasn't the question which seemed to be
unusual but the fact that this question came from 5-grader. The question was
what we computer people do about Y2K and if this is going to be disaster for
everybody. Of course I replied that there is no danger from applications
prospective, those are being fixed, maybe some hardware needs replacements
but otherwise things are fine. The only problem I see is panic being caused by
some people, media and definitely some marketers.
The fact that Y2K buzzword is known to 10 old year kids, indicates the size
and potential implications in this coming year on many aspects of our lives and
definitely on marketing and promotion on the internet. I'm curious what
others think about this issue in context of this discussion group.
Do you think, will internet/you  benefit from Y2K? In what ways?
I know that I'm already benefiting from it as independent computer
consultant for about last two years, working on replacement of large mainframe
not Y2K complaint system and I'm being paid quit good consulting rates.
In fact I can say that Y2K helped me a lot in establishing my own independent
business.
How about you?

Subject: Your Advice

Hello List Members,

I asked for advice for my web site and just wanted to
thank those of you who took the time to visit and write
to me offering your advice.  I got some very helpful
tips and a lot to think about.

I am in the process of studying and trying to re-organize.
One thing I need to do is to make sure that when a person
clicks on a link that the page opens in a new browser.
Would anyone care to tell me how to do that?

Also, I wanted to say that of all the newsletters I recieve,
this one has been the most helpful and the only one with
this kind of helpful interaction between members.

Thank you all again for giving me a little bit of your time.

From: Paul "the soarING" Siegel paul@learningfountain.com
Subject: Do We Need Intermediaries on the Net?

While reviewing Consumer Digest Online for a Learning Fountain
award, I began to wonder whether we need intermediaries online
between producers and consumers. The conventional wisdom says
we do not. It's easy for manufacturers to sell directly to consumers.
We even have a fancy word for it: "disintermediation".

I wondered nevertheless. Why do we have intermediaries, such as
whlesalers, warehousers and vendors? To help in the distribution of
products. The manufacturer deals with a few intermediaries, who in
turn work with more vendors, who then sell to a great number of
consumers. How does the Internet change things? It makes it very
easy for a manufacturer to sell directly to the final consumer. Many
of us buy computers and software this way. No middleman.

Could this be so? Is the situation this simple? Perhaps we do not
fully realize the revolutionary character of the change the Internet is
producing. We keep talking about products, and the distribution of
products. This was the forte of the Industrial Society, which no
longer exists. Today, we are in the Learning Society, whose
primary concern is services. How do you distribute services? Can
you even think in such terms?

Consumer Digest Online sparked my thinking. It seems that the
problem of distribution of products is being replaced with the
problem of matching services. In the first case, products are
distributed from manufacturer through intermediaries to consumer.
In the second case, services are matched to the client (not
consumer) through intermediaries to the service provider. Because
of product complexity, service intermediaries are needed for
products as well.

Think of what this means. It's a drastic change. In the old days, the
manufacturer was the kingpin, because he produced the product.
Today, the client is in the power seat, because he needs the
service. A service, unlike a product, can not be supplied without
thoroughly understanding the needs of the client. You and I may
have what appears to be the same problem, but we approach it
very differently. In essence, we have different problems. You need a
slightly different service than I do.

The client is king. He decides the services he needs, and the rest
of us scurry about to help him, either as a service provider or as an
intermediary.

Consumer Digest Online, is in a sense, a service intermediary.
Before buying anything on line, you visit it to find an appropriate
product, compare its features and price with others, and gather
other information to help make a good decision. Then you jump to
the website you choose and make the purchase. There are many
other sites that help you make wise purchases.

The service intermediary is in its infancy. Just think of the many
different types of consultants there are. Think further how their
various services can be better matched to individuals. We have
here myriads of opportunities.

Intermediaries are not dead. They are changing form. They are
becoming service intermediaries. They are oriented to the client,
not the service provider. Whether you are selling products or
delivering services, the service intermediary is in your future.
Consider this when developing your business strategy.

From: Chris Brown <chris@pegasusvideo.freeserve.co.uk>
Subject: What is a guestbook ?

If you said "A place where surfers can leave their opinion of my site", then
go to the bottom of the class! In reality, they are pseudo-databases.

True, they may not have the analytical / search capabilities of their bigger
brother, but it is none the less a database of information. And with careful
management, it can also be a constanly changing database as new info is
added to the top and old data falls of the bottom.

How does this help the webmaster ? He needs his casual surfer to return to
his site again and again. What better way than the fact that each time a
surfer visits his site, he can obtain fresh information. Plus, the webmaster
hasn`t had to do a thing to process the data.

Dependant on the subject matter, the originator might find other site owners
who also want to feature regularly updated news, and so add a link on their
site to the guestbook. Here, another crafty "ploy" can be exploited.

Some guestbooks can only be customised to a limited degree, whilst those
supplied by Dreambook ( http://www.dreambook.com )are infinately
customisable. You can alter the questions you ask the reader, alter the
autoresponder email they receive after submitting their entry, alter
colours, alter the bottom, the top et al. In this instant, the most valued
attribute is being able to amend the top of the guestbook; the part that is
seen before the individual entries are shown on screen. Here the orgainiser
adds a banner ad, plus details about the "database".

Can you see what`s happened ? Several webmasters have placed a link to your
guestbook on their sites, and as soon as a visitor to their site opens the
guestbook, they`re presented with a banner link to YOUR site as well as the
info they require! And when people submit data to the guestbook / database,
they get an e-mail Thank-You ... which also invites them to visit your
site!!

The success of the idea relies on one crucial factor - how news worthy is
the news in the guestbook. Without entries in the book, few webmasters will
wish to place the book on their site. The author has created several such
books which you can peruse to get the general idea.

http://books.dreambook.com/pegasusvideo/marketarticles.html
- a book that lists freely distributable articles to do with marketing on
the internet

http://books.dreambook.com/pegasusvideo/ezines.html
- a book that lists ezines plus circulation, ad rates etc

Apart from a promotional tool, guestbooks can also be used as "site
specific" databases. Again, I created a couple related to my video site.

http://books.dreambook.com/pegasusvideo/videoarticles.html
- a book relating to articles to do with video making

http://books.dreambook.com/pegasusvideo/producers.html
- a book where video clubs and producers can advertise their wares

So don`t just think of a guestbook as a place where people can leave their
comments, think of it as a database where people can add their own material.
It also runs on autopilot; as new entries are added so the others shuffle
down until the 100th one is dropped off the bottom.
And providing other site owners are willing to add a link to your guestbook,
your primary site gets more exposure!

Subject: Internet Marketing: Making The Rounds

You finally have your website up to par. You have your own domain name,
forms are working properly, and you can accept credit cards. So where
are the visitors?

What's that you say? You're dealing with a limited budget? Ok, the truth
is after you bought all those books to teach you how to market on the net,
monthly payments for hosting service and your Internet Service Provider
your spouse wants to see some green coming back in for a change.

You listened to folks rave on and on about the top classified ad sites so
you ran out and placed your free classified ad in each of them. Then
you waited...and waited...and waited...

Then you heard how great FFA pages were! So off you went to the most
popular of the FFA sites. Then they told you to get your own link page
and add an auto-responder. So you did, then you waited...and waited...
and waited...

STOP WAITING and Start Making the Rounds!

Yes, it's true that sales is a numbers game. The goal is to get visitors
to your site and the good news is there are lots of vehicles to
accomplish that goal.

The most successful sales people are minglers. They don't "wait" for
customers to come to them. They never miss an opportunity to put their
card in your hand. They're out there getting their name and business
noticed. Successful sales people are continually helping others which
naturally builds trust and confidence.

So, what are those "vehicles" to get visitors to my site? Glad you asked!
Keep reading and even more important apply what you're about to read.
It's not complicated and it certainly won't take up any more of your time
than all of those other great ideas you've been reading about!
