Hi Bogdan and everyone,

Just wanted to share a Fact Sheet that was published in February, 1999
in regards to this "Bill" that goes around the Internet off and on.
I researched everywhere I could regarding pending legislation
personally, and the last legislation mentioned was in 1996.
When I first got the letter I sent it off to everyone I could think of
and included it in my Smoker's Revolt! E-zine.  I did that before I
went back to research it thoroughly, and then had to go back very
red-faced to send a special issue out to my subscribers correcting
my mistake  :)

So, here is the Fact Sheet:

I received an e-mail about 8 weeks ago warning me of this same thing and
I wrote to my representative using the link given in the post. What I
found out is that the above information is false (which we should all be
thankful)
My representative also sent me an FCC (Federal Communications
Commission) Fact Sheet which can be viewed on the FCC web site at
http://www.fcc.gov found under "Consumer Information". The specific
document is located at
http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Common_Carrier/Factsheets/ispfact.html

Hope you will pass this on in your next issue.

Subject: Re: "Affiliate Programs, Can They Make You $$$ ?"

Hello Everybody:

In refference to HERVE RADLGRUBER's <hervrad@total.net> post
in issue #78: "Affiliate Programs, Can They Make You $$$ ?"

>>In essence, with either type you are in business
for yourself. You generate revenue by "producing
traffic to your site"(my emphasis).<<

This is the requirement that must be considered by
anyone before joining an affiliate program.  You MUST
have PLENTY of traffic before you'll see any dramatic
results, or have a way to generate it. Lots of it.
And this; IS the HARD Part!

An example of real life experience with affiliate
program results can be seen from this message I
received from

Plates/Net.Profit2020@I.D.IT, "Inc."
I.D. IT! - The reason for the Closing

dated: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:13:50 -0600

which states:

>>*Out of 3000 affiliates only 164 earned
commissions over the entire 5 1/2 months.<<

(Full Text Available on request, just send
email to: <raguilo@concentric.net>
subject: Full Text Plates/Net.Profit )

This message points to the realities seldom
addressed, if at all, by affiliate program
operators.

I have learned the hard way, and that's why
I recommend you get these two INVALUABLE
resources:

The Amazing Formula That Sells Products Like Crazy!
http://www.higherresponse.com/track/t.cgi/8065

How To Win The Affiliate Game
http://www.activemarketplace.com/cgi-bin/store/deliver.cgi?index-1371

I got them both, and they are worth EVERY penny.
I wish they had been available BEFORE I wasted so
much time shooting in the dark and believing the hype.

This in no way is intended to shoot down affiliate
programs. They WORK; but not for the reasons you may
think.

From: "Jocelyn Savage" <jocelyn@dewittec.net>
Subject: Question for list

Hi All,

I've been a lurker for some time and have learned marvelous tips. I do
appreciate it.

Now, I'd like to have advice if you would. We've been very blessed to be
accepted as a long term storage food dealer with a long standing company.
That happened Friday, (this is Sunday) so as yet we've not set anything up.

As you may or may not know, it is a *strong* business with the Y2K scare
(or reality) coming up. It's also essential that people be ready because,
whether or not Y2K is going to be devasting is really not the major problem
looming at the moment. If just 10% of the populace believes it and prepares,
with the fractional reserve system that our banks use, less than 5%
withdrawal of cash from the banks will crash them.

To be the dealer requires a heavy investment so, in short, any and all
marketing capital is vapor at the moment. We have enough commission play in
there though to give up about 10%. (It doesn't sound like much but it can
add up -- especially in this biz.)

I'm thinking about the affiliate idea but 10%, doesn't really leave enough
for a two tier program. Maybe, 10% of your signee's check? That is only in
reality 1% to me and is doable.

To buy any software is out of our league at the moment. Also, our server
can't seem to find it's cgi...

Soooo.... what do you see as my absolute best way to get this out there,
how to present it, etc. We are going to choose only 3 or 4 packages to start
with.

Please give any and all ideas however big or small. Also, tell me what you
would NOT want to see -- any tacky things you've seen with other pages of
this description that should not be repeated.

Thank you, thank you,

Jocelyn Savage

We would like a site review.  Our site is an online bookstore.  We have had
very good success and we make changes in content Monthly.  However, we are
open to any suggestions and comments.  We want our site to be visitor
friendly and easy to navigate.
ThankYou
Theo@aalida.com

</snip>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Theo, I just had to look at your site, and was very pleased with the way
that it loaded as soon as I clicked on the link and got to the front page
(the cover image was a little slow, but acceptable, who's isn't?), but I
gotta tell ya.......UGH after that ( I am allowed to be frank right?)
The attempt to make navigation easy is very apparent with common tables for
links, but I could not tell if I was actually getting to where I wanted to
go without having to fully check out the next page and reading through it all.
You have to make your destination-to clicks more apparent, the pages seem to
lose their focus, even when progressing with what should be straight
forward navigation of looking for a single album title or book title. I clicked on
the Jingle Bells link to get more info on the purchase and ended up on at a
page selling t-shirts!
Further looking around on the page I found what I wanted to see, down a
ways, but it was a confusing experience!
You should be using "bookmarked URLs #link - ><A HREF="#linkname">" so then
if I wanted to purchase the title that I clicked on, the page that it is on,
your big shopping cart page, the title that I am interested in is at the top
when the page loads.
You may want to use "mouseover" codes too! It will clean up the status
messages and you'll get your point across better. AND tell people that they
will be going to an out-of-site page to make the purchase!
<A href="your link goes here" target=" <A onMouseOver="window.status='what
you want people to see in the status bar goes here'; return true"
onMouseOut="window.status=''; return true"></A>
Everyone hates frames, but this may be an answer if used with a noframes
version too.
You need more sense in the background designs, that brown one is a shocker
to the eyes when it loads, since it does not follow the patterns that the
previous pages make you expect.
Some of the titles are a little blurry around the edges, the images need to
be bigger or outlined in black to show up better.
And get rid of the UNDERLINING! I, as most all visitors to your site expect
it to be a link to where I want to go, and it doesn't!
In total, a nicely designed site that needs more coherent navigation
techniques and better similar backgrounds.
Thanks,
Rob L.
Hi...
I would appreciate a review and comment about my site at
www.jackpotbooks.com
I did it all myself and this is my first attempt at webmastering.  I used the
freeyellow page wizard, but now have FrontPage 97 and might re-do the entire
site.  I also have six other items to sell and need to get them listed in my
"ccnow.com" merchant account shopping cart.
Thanks for your help.
PS:  I might be interested in placing a banner if you think enough of your
regular traffic would be interested in gambling related help.
Dear Bogdan-
Thanks for running such a great digest. I'm a relatively new subscriber a
nd am finding it to be useful and informative.
I am marketing the e-commerce site for Village StoryTapes
(http://www.storytapes.com). We rent and sell audio books and offer free
audio previews of all of our titles at our site. Since you requested that
subscribers submit their site for review, I thought I'd mention ours. The
criticism and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,  Yes, a constructive review would be nice.  I was forced to give up
my domain a couple months ago, because I couldn't raise the capital to
pay for it.  (very sad)  I've already changed my main page format at
least 3 times.
It's a decidedly Christian site, as that's the market I'm aiming for.
The url is http://songdove.hypermart.net/ .  Once I find some sponsors
willing to back the site, I'll be able to pay for ways to upgrade my
domain, advertise in better places, etc. and get the hits pouring in.
For now, a constructive review on what I am or am not doing right, would
be appreciated.  Thanks for making site reviews available.
Capturing Those Elusive Email Addresses!
By Joe Reinbold
Anything you read today regarding marketing on the Internet
contains a section on the importance of capturing email addresses.
Why? Because they should be the life blood of your marketing
activities. They can be a gold mine!
Let's say you have a web site which you are effectively promoting.
Your site visitors are increasing everyday. But you are not selling
much. It could be your offer or it could be the site setup itself.
But that cold be a topic for several more articles.
Once these visitors surf through and go elsewhere, you probably
won't see them again. One of the essentials to successful online
marketing is follow up. Most of our sales this past year have been
through either our ezine or through direct email follow up. Our
ezine subscriber base, now just over 3200, has been built through
a number of techniques. One of the primary techniques has been
offering a free subscription on our web site. A free subscription
offer is right at the top of our home page. We also have a free
subscription link on just about every page at our site. All they
have to do is enter their email address. Easy and quick! Plus they
automatically receive an automatic confirmation.
Once they are a subscriber, they will receive each of our two
weekly issues. This is our in house "mailing list" as we used to
call it and is worth its weight in gold! They came to the site
because they were interested in something. They also had an
interest in what the ezine offered since they subscribed. And
now they will be exposed on a regular basis to what we are
offering.
We also offer several monthly contests and these links are on
almost every page. We give away an ad on our online malls and
advertising in our ezine. If you have your own domain, it's your
real estate and you can just about do anything you want with the
space. Giving away an online ad each month costs just about zero!
Likewise giving away an ad in your ezine costs close to nothing.
What it your hosting company allows you unlimited autoresponders,
like ours does. Why not have a monthly drawing for a free
autoresponder. All it will cost you is your time in setting it
up for the winner. Once ours are setup, which we do ourselves online,
there is just about no maintenance. It's all automatic!
Give away free reports using autoresponders. Gear the report to
your site theme, product or service. Our site and ezine is
geared towards online marketing. We have free reports containing
links to free advertising, lists of free classified advertising
sites and a list of over 450 ezines. Each time someone requests
one of these free reports, we automatically receive an email
simultaneously with the requesters email address. These addresses
go right into our follow up file. Since all are interested in
advertising we follow up with an offer to become a member of the
Online Classified Club and an offer to subscribe to our ezine.
We have a very high percentage of sign ups to Club from these
follow ups as well as subscriber sign ups.
If we didn't have these options at our site, we would be working
in the dark, we would be losing sales and we would have no idea
who was visiting our site. Of course you are not going to capture
100% but if you get 50% of them, your that much ahead of the game!
Take a look at what you have to offer for free. Be a little
creative! Think of the potential of having access to these visitors
a second time, weekly or more! Capture Them!!!
Tips for Internet Beginners and "Wanna-Be's"
by John Rickman
So, after all those late nights of "surfing" the web you've
decided there's a fortune to be made on the Internet and you want
"your share of the riches." I agree the World Wide Web (or
Internet) is one of the last financial frontiers where the
"average" man or woman can compete with big business or major
corporations on a more level playing field. But, (and it seems
there always is a but!) having only recently entered this arena
myself I want to share with you some of the lessons I've learned
along the way.
1.  First and foremost beware of the "Get Rich Quick Claims." I
want to point out that the majority of people doing business on
the Internet are honest, helpful, trustworthy folks who are
willing to help and share information, tips, strategies, etc.
either through their websites, ezines (electronic newsletters),
or e-mail correspondence. Unfortunately there are people out
there who want nothing more than to part you with your money
?so Beware!
2.  Learn all you can about marketing products,
affiliate/reseller programs (and the people/company offering
them), hosting services, promotion, etc. Visit other websites and
see what they are doing that is working. Copy their success (no,
don't rip-off their ideas just use them as a springboard to
inspire you in your own creative thinking!). In short, anything
to do with getting your business started from site construction
through promotion you will want to know. You do not have to
become an expert in every facet but the more you know the better
off you'll be. On the Internet the saying "Knowledge is Power"
has never been truer.
3.  Stay within your budget/learn to manage you time. Resist the
temptation to spend, spend, and spend. In the beginning you
should concentrate on learning all that you can and not worry
about buying this or needing that because it's the first hosting
service you came across, the newest promotional software, the
biggest, greatest, best whatever that's come along. Do your
homework and spend your money wisely. Also, learn to manage your
time. While in the beginning you may not have 8 hours a day to
devote to your business, try to free up some time (the more the
better) everyday. If you write down how you spend your day you
will be amazed how much "free" time you can find.
The biggest step in starting any business is the first one. So go
ahead, take the plunge. The Internet is large and getting bigger
by the day. It is here to stay and there is room for us all. It
is my sincere hope that the information I have shared with you
will help in that first important step. Good luck!
======================Joke of the Day=====================
Jokes provided by Tom Johnson.
To subsribe to his joke letter directly  request it at
jokes@amoneymaker.com
put <jokes> in the subject line.
Juan comes up to the Mexican border on his bicycle.  He's got
two large bags over his shoulders.  The guard stops him and
says, "What's in the bags?"
"Sand," answered Juan.
The guard says, "We'll just see about that ~ get off the bike."
The guard takes the bags and rips them apart; he empties
them out and finds nothing in them but sand.  He detains
Juan overnight and has the sand analyzed, only to discover
that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags.
The guard releases Juan, puts the sand into new bags, hefts
them onto the man's shoulders, and lets him cross the border.
A week later, the same thing happens.  The guard asks,
"What have you got?"
"Sand," says Juan.
The guard does his thorough examination and discovers that
the bags contain nothing but sand.  He gives the sand back
to Juan, and Juan crosses the border on his bicycle.
This sequence of events if repeated every day for three years.
Finally, Juan doesn't show up one day and the guard meets
him in a Cantina in Mexico.
"Hey, Buddy," says the guard, "I know you are smuggling
something.  It's driving me crazy.  It's all I think about.....
I can't sleep.  Just between you and me, what are you smuggling?"
Juan sips his beer and says, "Bicycles."
