Examples of regression results that improved CTR:

  -- an upside down banner pulled 59% better than a
     right-side up banner

  -- an italic headline increased CTR by 1.48%

  -- a gray background banner had a CTR that was 0.50%
     higher than a yellow background banner

Examples of regression results that lowered CTR:

  -- each additional 1KB in banner size lowered CTR by 0.21%

  -- an animated 'click here' button pulled 33% less
     than a static 'click here' button (too many bytes)

  -- using a black background (compared to gray) lowered
     CTR by 0.87%

  -- a red shadowed headline lowered CTR by 0.51%

  -- headline with "professional photography" instead of
     "photography" lowered CTR by 0.15%

  -- adding a company logo reduced CTR by 0.15%

University of Michigan study shows that:

(1) Banners next to the right scroll bar (in the lower
    right-hand corner of the first screen) generated
    a 228% higher click-through rate than ads at the
    top of the page

(2) Ads placed 1/3 down page, as opposed to the top,
    generated 77% higher click-through rates.

On April 2nd I found out from two separate people my web site  was
nothing but a blank page when the Netscape browser was used.  I
panicked.  If half your visitors can't even see an image, it's like to
them your store burned down.  The first place I thought of for help was
the Adland Digest and immediately emailed for help.  Mr. Fiedur came to
my aid immediately.  He replied he would put it in the Digest but it
wouldn't be out until April 4th; but then, he went over and beyond the
call of duty.  He found my problem which just a </table> code I had
inadvertently deleted.  Since I create my pages with MS Publisher 97, I
am not all that familiar with HTML tables so I never would have found my
problem.  I am sincerely grateful but I also wanted the rest of the
Adland Digest Subscribers to know Mr. Fiedur epitomizes customer

definitely tell others of his newsletter.  I would like to suggest,
everybody else do the same.  Hats off to  you Mr. Fiedur.

From: Jason Leverette <jasonlevi@email.msn.com>
Subject: EMail Advertising

The Internet is not just a new marketplace, it's a whole new medium.
Madison Avenue letters that pull high response rates in the 'snailmail'
world of direct postal marketing often fall on deaf ears on the Net.
Don't use'em!

Here's a quick list of five do's and don't's of direct email copywriting
to help get you started:

Do: Deliver a personal message
Don't: Send out Madison Avenue letters

On the Internet, people want personal notes handcrafted for an
audience of ONE. A chatty "Hi! Thanks for stopping by! or Think
this might interest you?..." goes a lot farther than "Dear Online
Friend, You have been selected to receive ..."

Do: Keep it short
Don't: Go on and on for several pages

On the Internet, people want information and they want it now. That's
why short, to the point letters pull better than long-winded appeals.

Do: Get to the point
Don't: Make people figure it out for themselves

Internet users are busy people who receive dozens or even hundreds of
email messages a day.  If you can't come up with a three-word subject
line that sums up your message, start over.

Do: Give people an incentive to buy
Don't: Restate your everyday low prices

Internet users tend to be surfers with short attention spans.  Give them
reason to purchase your product or service now. Discounts; free
samples;  and limited-time offers are all powerful incentives to buy
NOW.

Do: Drive people to your Web site
Don't: Try to close the sale by email

On the Internet, you don't need to say it all in one letter.  Use your
direct
mail piece as a teaser to lure people to your Web site where you can
wow them with text, pictures, sounds, animation and video, then steer
them to your online order form to close the sale.

When your client arrives here...make it simple to complete the order.

From: Fiona Heares <heares@es.co.nz>
Subject: Meta tags importance

Hi, I have a question of sorts for Michael Bryant.
I notice you recommend using the keyword and description meta tags in the
last newsletter. You said that is how search engines place you/rank you.
My understanding was that not ALL search engines used/recognised the meta
tags..is this right?
Also, I have noticed, as I have been scrounging round for keywords...(by
looking at the info on sites that come up in top positions), MANY of them
have no keywords whatsoever!  I know about the "cloaking" of a sites info
but these particular ones, seem  genuinely not to have metas.

I am wondering if you don't use the metas you are forcing the engines to
look at your written text (visible text) and place your site that way.
Actually this to me, seems a far more appropriate way to list sites, and
definitely harder to cheat the engines.
You could hardly fill your page up with sex,sex,sex then go on to sell an
affiliate programme, which really the use of meta tags allows you to do.

Would be interested to know what you think...

Subject: The importance of  providing link on my website

Dear  Sir

I am hosting a commercial  website  providing Furnished flats for rent in
Delhi India, at-- http://furnishedflats.hypermart.net --.
I have applied to various search engines and adeed the url  of the site at
appropriate  real estate  resources.
I would like to seek yr advice on the importance of  providing link on my
website , for promoting my website
Secondly ...what is in yr opinion ..the best way of promoting the website

Thanks

Ms M Gopal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from editor.
If I understand right your question re. "importance of  providing link on
my website , for promoting my website" I believe you mean Adland Affiliate
link which gives free promotions to sites linking to Adland.
Link to Adland  on your site will give you benefits only if it is placed
in prominent place  and people are using it to visit Adland. When nobody
clicks on the link, you won't get anything for that. The whole idea is
around exchange of visitors. If you bring visitors to Adland your ad will
be displayed at the top of Adland pages according to rules found on the
page
http://www.adlandpro.com/become_an_affiliate.asp   If your ad gets clicked
you will get visit from Adland. So in addition to keeping  your link, you need
to write your ad in that way so it draws attention.
See here for list of ads and their effectiveness at Adland.
http://www.adlandpro.com/help/results.asp
Adland affiliate program guaranties that your ad is displayd on the top
of each page.
In addition you will be eligible for 20% commissions from services sold
at Adland.
Now you can not only keep link to Adland but also have your own classifieds
on your page which are interfaced with Adland classifieds.
See this two sites for example how this can be done.
http://www.web-source.net/adland.htm
http://www.compucan.com/classifieds.htm
Your only effort is to join Adland affiliate program and click Create
button once you are accepted. Then place created code on your pages.
To your second question
"what is in yr opinion ..the best way of promoting the website"
There is no only one best way o promoting website.
Each type of promotion will work if is targeted properly to your type of
business. You need to do some testing. Look for sites which offer promotion
and buy from them smaller packages to see what results you can get.
Always track your promotion as much as possible. Without tracking you won't
know if visitors are not coming or are just not interested in your product
or service.
This here are main types of promotion which you should try in your testing.
1. Banners
2. E-zine , newsletters , discussion groups
3. Multiple search engine submissions and FFA
4. Search engine page optimization
5. Opt-in lists.
6. Exchange of links with other webmasters
7. Search engines are important type of free promotion but unless you
   optimize your pages, traffic to your site from them  won't be enough.
Dear Bogdan,
I am ready to receive as I have given.
I would like a site review for my site http://www.aLoveLinksPlus.com
I have tested the content for this site in varying formats and believe that I now have a winning style to it.
But my own eyes may be clouded, as my tongue can be sharp when reviewing other's sites, so do I request that mine is given the "brutal treatment"
Thanks,
I've been most impressed by the candid site reviews that have been
appearing on your newsletter. My site has just plunged from no.1 on
site, partly with a view to getting my rating back but mainly, a general
opinion on how I can improve it. It's a website for UK residents wanting
to work from home, but has loads of information relevant worldwide.
By the way, no need to mention I'd be better with my own domain.
Somebody already has the names I wanted in co.uk and com.
I have a website which gets hits but so far has made no money at all so
===================G u e s t   A r t i c l e (1)=====================
The Two Greatest MYTHS About Online Marketing Are:
By Paul Robison
In traditional, direct postal mail advertising, there is an accepted rule: The
response to your direct mail campaign will be based 25% on your piece (what
your mailout looks like), 25% on your offer, and 50% on your mailing list.
This means that no matter what you are selling, and no matter what your ad
looks like, fully half of its effectiveness will be the result of how well you
identify and focus on getting it in front of those who are most likely to buy
it.
Simple, isn't it? A beautiful brochure, offering discounts on freezers is
going
to be more effective if mailed people living in warm climates than it is if
mailed to people living at the Arctic Circle.
While the Internet gives you potential access to millions of customers, in
reality, most of them are never going to be your customers for many reasons
over which you have no control. The TRICK to effective internet marketing can
be simplified in to three steps:
1. Determine YOUR unique selling position (what makes your product or services
special)?
2.  Determine WHO your target audience is.
3. Take each feature of your product or service and convert it into a BENEFIT
that the target audience will appreciate.
OK, I did all of the above so what do I do now? How do I promote my web site?
There are many ways to promote your web site. Some are free and some cost
money. We'll talk about the free things that you can do, today, to promote
your
web site. Now, when I say free, you realize that it will still cost you TIME.
Assuming that you are willing to invest your time, there are many effective
things that you can do to promote your web site. Develop a "traffic" attitude.
The more traffic you can attract, the more likely that you are to make a sale.
1. A Signature File. Most email programs has the capability to add a small
signature file at the bottom of every email that you send. This file is like a
small classified add that goes to everyone who receives your email. In fact,
you might even consider it your online business card. It should have a line or
two about what you site is about and why people should visit it. It should
also
have your URL (your web site address). Signature files are commonplace. No one
should object to you using one. However, there are certain commonly accepted
standards: Your signature file should be about three lines. Up to six lines is
probably acceptable. Not make the signature files so big that it is larger
that
your email messages. The one thing you don't need, in your signature file, is
your email address. It will be included, automatically, in the header of your
messages.
2. Join Newsgroups. Spend a few days reading several groups, to get an idea of
the types of postings that are normal for each group. Post a question, or
respond to someone else's question. Give an opinion. Be sure to stay on the
topics that are pertinent to a particular newsgroup. . The point is, your
signature file will be displayed to everyone who read your newsgroup posting.
The more insightful, lucid, and relevant your postings are, the more positive
impression you will create on other readers.
3. Write some newsletter articles. The articles should be about what you know
and what you are selling from your web site. You don't have to be an
accomplished writer. Use a spell checker and proof read for grammar, but it is
the content that people are interested in. Send your articles to e-zine
publishers. Most publishers are interested in fresh articles. Tell them that
they may use your article in their e-zone, or on their web site, free of
charge. With each article, include a "resource box". This is much like your
signature files. It can tell the readers something about you, and give your
site and email addresses. Publishers will include it with your article, if
they
decide to publish it.
4. Send email. Don't send unsolicited messages, but, when you receive a
message
from someone, answer it. Tell them that you will consider their offer, or
whatever they are writing about, and ask them to visit your web site.
Sometimes, you will find that you can do business with each other. In some
cases, you will find people who offer products or services that complement
yours, without competing directly with you. Offer to exchange links, to each
other's site, with them.
There are many other ways to promote your site, both free and paid. Future
articles will cover those. Regardless of the methods that you choose, there is
one rule to success: Be consistent. Whatever methods you select, be certain to
use them on a consistent and persistent basis. You will see few results if you
spend a day doing all of the above, and then do it again each day for two
weeks. Set aside an hour, two hours -- whatever time you have EVERY DAY.
