From: "Robert Chalmers" <robert@chalmers.com.au>
Subject: E-Commerce. Look carefully at merchant card facility offerings

I guess I must receive twenty offerings a week across my system exhorting me
to offer merchant facilities on sites. While this is all very well, using
the setup of others, there are pitfalls. Major pitfalls. I've been on the
net since before it was an internet, and have had quite a few offers...
I won't be naming names here at all, as it's easy enough to check the facts
yourself.
But I am applying some rules of thumb here, to help you focus.
1. Look closely at what you are selling. It's price. How much you actually
make per sale, gross profit.
2. what will the Merchant facility cost you? what percentage of each sale
goes to the credit card co.
3. in other words, how many items do you have to sell to just pay for the
credit card costs.
4. some major sites report up to 70% of transactions are done on
bogus(stolen) cards. Can you protect yourself against that type of loss.
5. Be aware that having merchant facilities DOES NOT INCREASE YOUR SALES. It
does increase your woes however.
6. Most online sales are for small priced items. $5 to $25 in value. Some
books shops are exceptions to this rule, but have high profiles, and are
considered to be safe. Most sites are unknowns though.
7. Nearly ALL Merchant Facilities will hold back your money for as long as
six months. CAN YOU AFFORD TO TRADE with no cash flow. You still have to
purchase stock, but get no return for months.
8. If you have a legitimate business, go through the hoops at your local
bank. It may, and will take months to set up, and still cost you - but you
will be legitimate, and can control every part of the process yourself.
9. If you are out for a "quick buck" - forget. There is no such thing. Even
Amazon hasn't turned a profit yet.
10. Smile as you go under....

cheers

Hi All,

On the subject of E-Commerce, what if you want an e-commerce account but
the bank is saying no, to your merchant account because of what the
:"poduct is" that you are selling.  Also beware when you open your business
on the internet, and you are shipping a product yourself.  It can become
very time consuming.  Good Luck, to all.

About ibill.  There is a much better way to *sell for free*.

ibill has some serious limitations.  The worst being they are set up
only for time frame access.  What i mean by this is you have to
pick an amount of days the user is allowed access for your site
(sex sites obviously really use ibill).  When i suggested to them
this was very limiting, they suggested, very coldly i might ad, that
perhaps i should go somewhere else!

www.Clickbank.net is WAY more beneficial if you are selling
downloadable services or goods.  It is Free and they keep a lot
less than ibill. I am in the process of changing over all my selling to
them.   Check it out at

http://hop.clickbank.net/hop.cgi?bearpass

You can also set up your OWN affiliate program with them!  It is
very interactive and very straightforward.  Best free one I have yet to
see.

Subject: RE:  Winning The Affiliate Game - My Thoughts!

Hi Bogdan:

Thought I'd comment on the posting by Chris Leilich on Declan Dunn's,
Winning The Affiliate Game.  I bought the book (the online version) and
found it useful.  When I make such a purchase it is not easy on me
financially - but I make the purchase to learn something I feel that I
need to know.

A book is overpriced, only if you don't learn from it.  I had been
"playing/trying to make money with affiliate programs for 6 months or
more and was getting nowhere.  I began making use of the information in
Dunn's book and start making money.  Not a fortune, but a lot more than
I had made previously.  The information contained in the book made this
possible.

Yes, I became an affiliate!  Yes, there is a link on my site offering
his book.  But, if I never get a single order for his book.  I have
earned much more than the cost by increased profits from other affiliate
programs.  One should never buy something (books, course, etc.) hoping
to make back the purchase price by reselling that same product.  I can
recommend this book as being worth the money - if you want to learn how
to profit from affiliate programs.

Thanks for listening.

>Best regards,
>Mris

To Ris and other good people considering classified ads,

Ris is correct in saying that a good number of people who use classified ads
are those who are posting their own offer or promotion to others.  On the
other hand, experience and some common sense will tell you that when people
go to a classified ad site, they also generally look to see what is being
posted there.  How many times have you browsed the listings and clicked on
an item or two just out of curiousity to see what is being offered and how
it is written so you might learn something from it?  Or maybe even to visit
that website and consider their offer? The seller is still a consumer and is
often looking for something newer and better.

The whole point of posting to classified ad sites is exposure.  The higher
the volume of that exposure, the better your chances are of getting people
to your website to buy or subscribe. Marketing via classified ad sites is,
in part, a numbers game, similar to mass media advertising such as
television and radio spots. The more people you can reach for a given
"bang-for-buck", the higher your response will be.

To some extent that assumes you have a carefully conceived and written
headline and ad copy.  How often do you see basically the same headline from
different people repeated endlessly through a classified ad site's listings?
Although there are about twenty hot words that get everyone's attention
quickly, it seems like everyone is using them making it is so easy for your
message to get lost in the sameness. Why not use words that generate
immediate attention and interest combining them with some originality.  In
other words, exhibit a little bit of creativity and stand out a bit from the
rest, being careful not to go overboard and miss your audience.

Every classified site out there is made up of posters, browsers, and buyers
universally.  How well you do as a result of your posting has a lot to do
with what you say to your audience. Check our links page for good places to
post your ads (including Adland!) and to promote your website.

Best to all,
Mary Morgan

E-MAIL YOURSELF

If you're like me the first thing you do is check your e-mail in the
morning.  Use this to your advantage.  Just before you go to bed, e-mail
yourself with a "TO-DO" list.  Psychologically you've done three things.
Cleared your mind so you can sleep better, organized your next day
based on what you got accomplished today and when you awake, you won't
have to consciously use your brain until it's ready for coherent
thought.  Then, you can either print it off and check off the items or
you can save a tree by just leaving it on your mail program and
referring to it periodically throughout the day.  What you don't get
done, just copy & paste in your next night's email or Fwd the list to
yourself with new additions.  Do this each night and you will be amazed
at how it keeps you focused.

Let me start of by saying I really enjoy this digest.  it is useful
      text amidst lots of cyber-fluff.

Regarding this posting in the last digest:

>* Also, I'll send you some information that you need to know
>concerning a possible problem with AllAdvantage that could end
>up losing you money.  If you have not yet signed up for
>AllAdvantage,...

****I received this information:

"I signed up for AllAdvantage, the program you describe in your
forum, and I'm very hopeful that it will work out. Two words of
warning, however:

1) My ID# for the program, sent to me in an auto-e-mail, is AMH-
847.
Note the hyphen. I pasted this ID into my promotional URL thusly:
http://alladvantage.com/go.asp?refid=AMH-847
After promoting the site at considerable expense in time, and even
money, I was informed by a contributor to an e-zine that the
hyphen had to go, or my ID# wouldn't register with AllAdvantage.
So, the URL
ought to be http://alladvantage.com/go.asp?refid=AMH847. So, if
you join the program, don't make the same mistake that I did.

2) I was already getting frantic by the time the e-zine publisher
informed me about this problem, because my account information
page showed no activity, and I knew that that was wrong.
AllAdvantage is run out of an apartment in Los Altos, California.
The company does not answer its e-mails, except with an
autoresponder, and it does not answer phone calls. At first, on the
phone, I got an answering machine. My message was never
returned. Now, their message box is full, and you can't even leave a
message.

Is this program ever going to get off the ground, let alone be a
winner? I'll be optimistic, and say Flip a coin."

It is being attempted to be confirmed at this time that
ALLAdvantage is, in fact, being run out of someone's apartment!
Money is even being offered for a photo of the place!

"if anyone lives in this town we will pay a serious
reward for a picture of this physical address! Just drive over and
check it out. I can not believe that they are a
?rinky-dink? outfit
but ? ??? Let?s make sure this is a legitimate company, okay?"

Hello Adlanders,
I've been a subscriber to adland for just a short time and must say
that this is by far the best digest available because it is full of
very practical and useful marketing information.  I only have one
suggestion to make.  There are a lot of requests for website reviews
and I'm sure these are helpful (but only to the webmaster as they
pertain to him or her).  I'm wondering if these can't be handled by
email without taking up space in the digest?

Website reviews are useful and helpful...but as I see it they are
only helpful to the one getting the review.  Is there some other way
these can be handled?

DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR SITE WITH FREE DOORWAY PAGES
by Libby Sinclair

Have you seen the ads for people charging you hundreds of dollars to
make doorway pages for your site? If you have a little time, I'll
show you how to make your own doorway pages absolutely FREE.
Basically a doorway page is a page that leads people, or is a doorway,
to your actual site. Each of these pages have a different url so you
can submit these multiple pages to the search engines, and you can
try different keyword combinations on each doorway page to increase
your hits. So let's get started.

1. Figure out how many doorway pages
you want to have for your site and then go out and start registering
for free homepages. If you want to start off with 3 doorway pages,
then you'll need 3 free homepages. Here is a short list of some of
the more popular free homepages -
http://www.angelfire.com
http://www.tripod.com
http://www.geocities.com
You can go to any search engine and type in "free homepages" and
you'll get a huge list.

2. The object of a doorway page is not to spend countless hours
creating a complete homepage. You just want to include the title of
your homepage as well as several catchy lines or phrases that will
attract visitors to your site. Then include a link to your homepage.
Take a look at an example of one of the doorway pages I made for
my site at http://hotyellow98.com/webcenter

3. Try using different keywords on each doorway page to see which
ones work best and generate the most traffic. Here are a couple of
places to go to see which keywords are being used the most by people:
GoTo's Top 100 Search Terms -
http://www.goto.com/d/about/advertisers/clienttoolkit/
Top 100 Most Popular Search Terms - http://www.searchterms.com/
Meta Crawler Meta Spy - http://www.metaspy.com
Another thing you can do is to go to any search engine and type in
the keyword(s) that best describe your site. Take a look at the sites
in the top 10 positions and view their source codes. Webtv users can
view the source code on any page by going to http://watson.addy.com
and typing in the url for the page they want to view. Try using 1 or
2 different keywords or keyword phrases on each doorway page to see
which ones give you the best results.

4. If you need help building your META TAGS for your doorway pages,
here are a couple of easy to use Meta Tag builders:
http://www.webpromote.com/metatag/metatag.cgi
http://www.siteowner.com

5. Start submitting your doorway pages to the search engines. For a
list of free and low cost search engine submission services, go to
http://www.webheadcentral.com/submit.html

6. Finally, you'll want to check and see how your page is ranking on
the search engines. If you don't have the money to purchase search
engine ranking software, here are 2 sites that will let you know how
your siteranks: http://rankthis.webpromote.com/
http://www.siteowner.com/
Now go out and start generating traffic to your site!

======================Joke of the Day=====================

A man went into the proctologist's office for his first exam.
The doctor told him to have a seat in the examination room
and that he would be with him in just a few minutes.

Well, when the man sat down in the examination room, he noticed
that there were three items on a stand next to the doctor's
desk: a tube of K-Y jelly, a rubber glove, and a beer.

When the doctor came in, the man said, "Look Doc, this is my first
exam... I know what the K-Y is for... and I know what the
glove is for... but what's the BEER for?" At this instant, the
doctor became noticeably outraged and stormed over to the door.

The doc flung the door open and yelled to his nurse,
"Dammit, nurse!!! I said a BUTT LIGHT!!!"
