Greetings All

Welcome  (108) new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes there is a need to say or do  things  which not necessarily
will benefit us, but might benefit others, particularly if  they  need
help and are suffering.
Living in occupied country  till my late twenties  and leaving it over
10 years ago,  makes me very emotional about Kosovo today.
I can understand what they are going through and my anger towards
occupants  grows with each day after seeing those pictures on TV
and hearing stories of atrocities.
Hitler is still alive and will be killed many times in the future and I hope
that this one will be killed sooner rather than later.
My way of protesting against the war, is by not including Yugoslavia nor
Serbia on Adland Classifieds country list.
This should send the  message to all those who support and vote for
Hitler of our times that what happens in their country for last 10 years
is not acceptable.
This is my little contribution in making aggressors less comfortable.
I know that this won't make Miloshevich  change his mind, but
it will help to make aware those who voted for him that world
is watching and won't ever forget that.
I received this letter below recently and felt strongly that you should read it.
BF.
This here is the list of resources which might be helpful in fighting
credit card fraud
FBI's Infrastructure Protection and Computer Intrusion Site
<http://www.fbi.gov/programs/ipics/wforccs.htm>
The best of the government sites, these pages include forms for
reporting suspected credit-card fraud, latest press releases
related to scams and valuable advice for IT managers implementing
electronic-commerce security.
* Federal Trade Commission's E-commerce & the Internet
<http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/menu-internet.htm>
More consumer-oriented than the other sites, these pages offer
valuable tips for preventing fraud and also give updates on FTC
antifraud activities.
* U.S. Secret Service
<http://www.ustreas.gov/fincen/>
Online credit-card scams generally fall into the Secret Service's
jurisdiction. This site offers information about what types of
fraud exist and provides contact information to report crimes.
* FraudBuster
<http://www.munica.com/fraudbuster/>
Woven in with this site's numerous ads for site and catalog
development are some useful tools. You can search a card number's
history to find out if it's been involved in fraud before, check
out suspicious E-mail addresses and track IP addresses. You'll
need to be a member to use them, but membership is free.
* Internet Scambusters
<http://www.scambusters.org>
One of the top anti-credit-card fraud sites on the Net,
particularly for smaller merchants who may not have access to the
elaborate verification systems. But it's also useful for picking
up tips on the latest fraud schemes including IP and E-mail
addresses thieves are using, methods and other important
information. And this site is dedicated to fighting all kinds of
Internet scams, including spamming, phony domain registration and
the like. Useful free electronic newsletter.
* National Check Fraud Center
<http://www.ckfraud.org>
Especially good sources for alerts to criminal activities
centered around financial scams, including credit cards.
Lists bank accounts, aliases and methods criminals are using.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from Editor.

I believe Laurie was responding to L.C.Borsboom posting in last
digest "English in Spain".

Although pointer given here is useful, doesn't address the issue, L.C.Borsboom
raised in regards to languages.

As far as I'm aware Content-Language for META HTTP-EQUIV will only help
browser in displaying proper character set.
This is apparent when browsing sites which have non-English characters
or at least not the ones from set of 256 standard characters.

He writes

<snip>

What does this mean for the future? Is it necessary to have a web site
in several languages? Who will translate all those web sites in the most
spoken European languages? Can we simply ignore, for example, the
Spanish language?

</snip>

Further responding to post of L.C.Borsboom, I believe that once Internet
becomes more accessible in countries other than USA and Canada where
Internet access is unlimited and cheep of free,  we will see  more and more
sites appearing in  their native languages. But Internet is giving potential to make
business not only locally and those who will want to appeal to  particular
market will have to keep versions of their sites in those languages.
Not everybody will learn English or Spanish but almost everybody can see
difference in price, particularly if it is expressed in $ USD and in the
future also in Euro. Thus sites supporting many languages will get most
business. Spanish will be definitely one of the first languages I will add to
Adland Classifieds in the future.

To further expend it,  I'm including in today's digest, article which
is a reprint from VirtualPromote Gazette,  http://virtualpromote.com/
showing how you can make your site translated to most popular languages.

<snip>
Is the languages that we speak only an instrument to communicate or is
there more behind?
</snip>

In my opinion language is only means of communication.
Being able to communicate in three languages  I don't see
any advantage of one over another.

I also don't believe in any fight for prevalence of any language on the Internet
for political reasons.
Economics will do the job in adopting other languages.

B.F.

Subject: Site Content For Downloading

Hi Gang!

I would appreciate some help. I would like to offer my
visitors free information to download from my site; however,
being the "greenhorn novice" that I am, I have no idea how to
accomplish this.

My idea is to allow my visitors the option to download 1-4
page monthly family safety reports. How do I accomplish this
service for my visitors?

Thanks for your input!

Hello, and congrats on this great list! I have learned a lot from my first
list already! My thanks to David Seitz for the great info on how to get Meta
tags by visiting the site he listed. It has helped me a great deal. If only
everyone else out there could offer valuable info instead of sending you the
same email three to five times a day without thinking that maybe if you were
interested, you would have contacted them already! I believe the net is a
place of business, just like an office, and we need to treat it as
such--have a grand day everyone!

From: Bruce Ian Coy <minotaur@soltec.net>
Subject: Good e-mail managing software

Dear Bogdan,

I meant to post to the Adland Digest some time ago, in order to see if
anyone could help me find a good e-mail managing software for free,
something that would enable me to set up my own lists and even start a
newsletter without driving me crazy and taking up all my time (the way
Netscape mail would).  Well, I delayed and procrastinated, as usual, and
lo and behold, someone sent me a spam message which answered my
question!

By the way, people are often annoyed at all the spam out there nowadays
- my feeling is that it's no worse than junk mail, and doesn't kill a
tree.  You can always delete it, but sometimes it really does contain
valuable information.

In this case, the message itself was incomprehensible - he wasn't trying
to sell me anything; just wanted to know whether I wanted to be on his
list so that he could start selling me stuff.  Apparently, he had
already been kicked off of Hotmail for spamming.  The interesting part
was the automatically inserted ad at the bottom, for a free piece of
software called Aureate Group Mail.  I clicked on that, and it was just
what I was looking for!  If anyone else needs software like this, here's
the URL:

http://www.group-mail.com/

If you don't mind a very inobtrusive ad in your mailings, you can use
this software for free.  To upgrade, as I recall, costs $49.00.
However, I think that the ad actually adds value to your mailings, since
it informs people about where they can get their own mail manager
software.

BTW, after I downloaded the software, I received a message from an
e-zine claiming to have a subscriber base of over 14,000 (apparently, I
signed up for a free ad somewhere...)  You guessed it:  they manage
their list with the free version of Aureate Group Mail!

Hope this helps people.

REACH OUT WORLDWIDE WITH ONLINE TRANSLATION
>From VirtualPromote Gazette
http://virtualpromote.com/gazette1.html

The temptation to broaden the audience for a Web site becomes
irresistible at some point and the mind starts to mull over those
massive audiences that could be reached if only we knew some
languages other than our native one.

No longer must you totally resist the temptations. You can make your
site multi-language accessible for little or no money.

I opted for the 'No Money' route. What a surprise! I snooped around
the AltaVista translation service and discovered that they really do
what people to make use of it. So I did.

If you take a look at the VirtualPROMOTE home page you'll see
translation links to switch to any one of several languages. Click on
one and you are transported to the AltaVista translation service
where the page is translated and displayed with all formatting and
graphics intact.

All of the links on the page are converted to send the next page
clicked on back through the translator so your visitor can stay in
their own language throughout their visit.

This is a great service to offer your visitors and the cost is
certainly right. Just check the source code for the VirtualPROMOTE
home page to see how easily you can do this for your site. You're
even welcome to take the animated flags graphic. Just don't link to
it on my server, please.

Below are some very good translation resources for you to take a look
at if you want even more languages available on your site.

__________

AltaVista Translations
http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/
This popular search engine was early into the translation game on the
Web. Their translations are powered by the Systranet software (see
below.)

You can paste any text into the input box and have it translated. Or
even better for your visitors you can send them to the translation
page, enter the URL of your home page and select a language. The
translator will translate everything on your page and show it to them
with all graphics and formatting intact. Your visitor can then
continue to navigate your site in their own language by just clicking
on your page links, since AltaVista has replaced all of your links
with links through the translator for on-the-fly translations. This
is very cool for your visitors.

__________

Systranet
http://www.systranet.com/translate.html
This popular software translates between English and French, German,
Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. The translations are among the best
currently available and you can use their translator for free
on-line.

__________

World Language Resources
http://www.worldlanguage.com/
This company offers a lengthy list of products for just about every
language you can think of. Of special interest is their free
translation application that you can use on-line. Also check out
their huge list of free download translators.

Languages available are:
<http://secure.combridge.com/world/online.htm

English to: Brazilian Portuguese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch,

======================Joke of the Day=====================

Jokes provided by Robert Jackson <robj5@centuryinter.net>

Ole and Lena were sitting down to their usual cup of morning
coffee listening to the weather report coming over the radio.
"There will be 3 to 5 inches of snow today and a snow emergency
has been declared. You must park your cars on the odd numbered
side of the streets."Ole got up from his coffee and replies
"Well, okay." Two days later, again they both are sitting down
with their cups of morning coffee and the weather forecast is,
"There will be 2 to 4 inches of snow today and a snow emergency
has been declared.  You must park your cars on the even numbered
side of the streets." Ole got up from his coffee and replies,
"Well, okay." Three days later, again they both are sitting
down with their cups of coffee and the weather forecast is,
"There will be 6 to 8 inches of snow today and a snow emergency
has been declared.  You must park your cars on the..." and then
the power went out and Ole didn't get the rest of the
instructions. He says to Lena, "What am I going to do now, Lena?"
Lena replies, "Aw, Ole, yust leave the car in the garage."
