My idea is to allow my visitors the option to download 1-4
page monthly family safety reports. How do I accomplish this
service for my visitors?

</snip>

Dear Carl,
If it is only 1 to 4 pages a month, you'd be better off publishing them on your site, and advertising the fact that the information is available and updated each month. Also add a newsletter and use that new information as your newsletter content. An auto

responder is also a great option for such content, then it just gets e-mailed right to your visitor.
Asking someone to download has many pitfalls, and you will lose much opportunity if that is the only option you give for someone to get relevant site information.
Text gets mashed inside many peoples computers, and to show your best face you need it to look good.
Just as an example, look at your own signature as it appeared in the last Adlands digest, along with this request for information. In my system the html was stripped away, so it was just a bunch of unlinked code. <snip>
PS: I am currently offering our signature gold-embellished
"Guardian" Angel lapel pin to the first 500 to ask for it at:
<a href="www.route23.com/1guard.asp">The Guardian Company:
"Making Your World Better... Safer!"
</snip>
You may see it as you intended, but I did not. This is not how your work wants to look, keeping it clean makes it look great for everyone. The simpler information can be accessed at your site, the more return traffic you will get.

Good Luck!

Hello Carl & Adland Subscribers:

As a long time subscriber and "lurker" , I am happy to be able
to help you with this. I have a client that I have just set up
with several options to do this.

The easiest way  would be in an autoresponder. Most people
can just click on the autoresponder and they will receive the
pages in their email immediately.  However, it is important to
note that  AOL users may not be able to  receive  the autoresponse
through their AOL email filters.  For the many people that use
AOL or have strict filters on their email, you should also offer a
downloadable text version.

Many people offer Adobe Acrobat.  I have found that people
that do not have the Acrobat Reader will often "pass" and not
download the pages. To me, not offering a version that works
for them is like turning them away, so I also suggest that you
offer a downloadable plain text (notepad) version .

This is done by uploading a text file to the anonymous ftp area
of your server.  In most cases, after uploading the file, you only
need to create a link something like:
ftp://yourdomain.com/pub/yourfile.txt

Your host will be able to provide you with infomation on how to
upload to the public ftp and how to link to the file for public
downloading.  If you have additional questions,  please feel
welcome to email me personally for more help!

As a note to Bogdan; I thoroughly enjoy your ezine and look
forward to each issue.  It is wonderful to see a fellow Canadian
having such a positive effect on the Internet as a whole!

Sincerely,
Linda Caroll

From: Rafael Aguilo <raguilo@concentric.net>
Subject: Site Content For Downloading

Hi All:

In reference to Carl Ellis <cellis45308@yahoo.com>
question about preparing site content for downloading;
one basic fact should be established: Any time you connect
to a website and "see" one of its pages, you have
downloaded a file. With that understood, and out of the way;
the rest is simple.

All you have to do is prepare the information you want to provide
and  "upload" it to your web site. Only its' file format( *.exe,
*.gif, *.jpg, *.wav, *.mov*, .zip, *.htm, *txt, etc.) will determine
how it will be finally displayed(seen or heard). Create a link to it
from a "download" page and voila!

Here's an example:  I give away an incredibly usefull EBook
that helps Webmasters sharpen their Internet Business Skills.
It's an AWESOME book on: How To Apply The Secrets Of A True
Internet Marketing Warrior To Finally Start Making Some Money
On The Web!

You can get it at:
<http://members.xoom.com/raguilo/magic.exe>

Since it's in exe format(executable), you'll have to
"wait" for it to "download" before you can "see" it.

An example of "instantly viewable" content is this:
<http://www.concentric.net/~raguilo/howquit.htm>

It's a free report on how to quit smoking, based on
my real life experience.

If you noticed, the "link" page I created to access these
files is THIS MESSAGE.

This has taken us through all the steps I described before.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards to All;

Rafael Aguilo

From: Elizabeth K. Scott <loanlist@loanlist.com>
Subject: How to post your site in a different language

Hello Bogdan,

The participants of your Adlands Digest have helped me so much that I feel
*required* to issue this warning:  Before you go "translating" your site
into another language, using ANY translator program, including AltaVista's
Babelfish, and even the ones available for sale, please understand their
very real limitations!  The idiosyncrasies of ANY language do NOT
necessarily translate into another as you would wish.

For instance, we recently received an email all in Spanish.  The sender's
closing sentence was: "Otra cosa, no dudes en contactarnos si tienes alguna
duda o pregunta o comentario respecto al programa de ventas. Con gusto te
ayudaremos."
Translated by AltaVista, this came out to: "Another thing, you do not doubt
in contacting to us if you have some doubt or asks or commentary with
respect to the program of sales. With taste we will help you."

Because I happen to have a  *very* small amount of understanding of the
Spanish language, I understand that this person was saying, "Don't hesitate
to contact us if you have questions or comments with regard to our
services.  We are happy to help you."  Yet, someone with NO understanding
of the Spanish language may think this person was an uneducated pervert who
wanted to lick me before he offered any assistance!

Adland members should also understand that when they insert their URL into
the AltaVista translator, ONLY the TEXT will be translated.  All of your
graphics will remain in their original language.  Therefore, if you have
link buttons - which are usually graphics - the only way to get these
translated is to enter them one at a time, and then change them
individually - one by one - on your "other-language" site.  This can be
extremely time consuming and expensive, if you have your outside webmaster
do these changes.

Even this would be worth it, IF you could be assured that the translated
version was correct as to actual word usage and grammar.  But, you CAN NOT
be assured!  Believe me, I know.

We recently had our entire LOANLIST.COM site translated into Spanish using
AltaVista's Babelfish program, including ALL the graphics and buttons.
Still, not entirely trusting the translations, I contacted more than a
dozen Hispanic organizations and several professional translators asking
them to review our Spanish site, and offering them full-page - even
full-site -  sponsorship in return for their editing of our Spanish site,
which consists of about 25-30 different pages.

>From professional translators, I got back $1,150.00 price estimates to
"fix" it - and they wanted to start from scratch, as they said our current
translation is too convoluted to really "fix" it.  From Hispanic
organizations, I got back statements to the effect that our Spanish site is
"riddled" with translation inaccuracies, and that I should absolutely
refrain from using "translator programs" at any cost - even FREE ones, as
they do NOT translate properly.  Mind you, these are responses I received
from entities that I offered FULL onsite credit and FULL site sponsorship
to, if they would just edit what I already had done!  Bottom line, No
takers.  Too much work.  Not even from L.C.Borsboom, to whom I offered the
same deal.  (In fairness, that's only been 2 days ago.)

Because we often do business with people who only speak Spanish (for
another site we own) we also use another translator program, which we paid
about $100 for - Accent DUO.  Even it translates "World Wide Web" into
"World Wide Fabric."  Wow.  That's helpful!

Bottom line:  Our webmaster charged us $1,260 for the time it took him to
translate our entire site into Spanish, including all the graphics, coding
- buttons and all, using AltaVista, which I TOLD him to use.  Only to find
out, we could have paid $1,150.00 to have it done "right" in the first
place by a professional translator.  I am about to pull our Spanish site
off our page because I am embarrassed by it - and will not put it back up
until I know it's actually correct in the Spanish language.

If any of you would like to know the professional translator of which I
speak, please email me directly at ekscott@loanlist.com   I will give her
YOUR email address so that she can contact you directly. (I haven't asked
permission from her to give out HER email address.)

Bogdan, this is yet another example of "too good to be true" which
AltaVista translates as: "demasiado bueno ser verdad."  Do YOU know if
that's what it really SHOULD say?

Subject: How effective are the classified submission tools?

Hi- I've recently subscribed to Adland and have found it very
useful..thanx! My question is about how effective are the classified
submission tools and what are the limitations, etc. Are they worth the
money? What is the difference between the one that only submits to 350 or
the one that submits to 1000? My way of thinking is simple, buy the one
that does more! Are they created equal? Any help on this would be
appreciated! Thanx Adland.....

Subject: If you want to see how an ISP can screw up your site

How do you deal with an ISP who has posted a banner on your site that is
approximately 800px wide because the code is wrong.  My site as a result
is a mess, thousands of hours down the tubes.  For 10 days I have been
sending messages via their Contact CGI form and have left messages on their
answerphone with no response.  I even sent them the code fix which is only
a change of two width parameters.

Further to this I had also registered a domain and paid by credit card on
a secure transaction form.  Have I received a receipt, No!! have I received
confirmation of registration No!!

How do I get action or where do I report it to address the problem.

STICK IT TO THEM! SECRETS TO POSTING OFF-LINE
------------------------------------------------------------
By: David Seitz Copyright ) 1999 All Rights Reserved

Are you taking the time to market your site off the web? If
not, you could be missing valuable contacts!

I use a technique to market my websites offline that has
created a steady flow of new contacts and reached out to
people that would normally never come in contact with me,
or any of my websites.

I take advantage of reverse mail for several reasons:

* It costs pennies to produce
* It's almost guaranteed to be read
* It's free to mail.

So, you're asking, what does it involve? It's really quite
simple. I use customized Post-it notes, you know, the small
paper pads with the sticky backs. I have custom pads created
with my web address and name printed on them. They are
inexpensive to produce and add a personal touch. You can
create your own rather quickly at iprint:
http://www.associatesearch.com/jump.cgi?ID=160

I place a Post-it note on every single piece of mail
leaving my office and home, including bills! Bills, you say?
YES, BILLS! I recently received a client who spent $2500 on
my graphic design services after seeing one of my Post-it
notes! Know where they saw it? At the gas company! Turns out
a lady working in the billing department had a sister who
was opening a bridal shop and needed a logo and flyer
created. She noticed the note stuck to my gas bill. Because
of the personal message I wrote, she decided to contact me.

I suggest you order a box of them today and start posting
them like mad on everything going way out of your home
or office. I always handwrite a short note on them to make
it personalized. Something small like: "Call me to discuss
your online needs" or "Visit our website online and email
me!" Short and to the point works best, and since it's
handwritten, it ads that personal touch. The fact that you
can stick them anywhere you want helps get them read. I
always stick them to my checks in any bills I have going
out.

Post-it notes can also be printed with your logo or other
image and you can create your Post-it notes on a variety of
bright colors that help get them noticed. I have them
printed in every color available.

If you put a little thought into it, I am positive you can
come up with a few creative uses for Post-it's in your own
marketing - foreheads not included!
