Finely success story.

I know that it takes courage to  present your own success story since you don't
know what are the experiences of other people on the list. But success story is not
measured in standard units e.g. amount of money made   or number  of employees
hired. Your success story starts when due to your decisions and efforts you start
enjoying what you are doing  and observing growth.

I'm providing this column because I believe that those of you who are willing to
share your success stories will encourage others to follow your steps and thus
help yourself by becoming more visible and help others buy presenting example
how success can be achieved.

The advertising which I'm offering to the winner of this contest,  is going to be
incredible boost  for his/her business.

Success story of the year link will be visible to 684,000 visitors during next
year and will be displayed 2,880,000 times taking into account only existing traffic to
Adland. Considering current statistics, this can bring about  10,800 visitors.
I'm sure that  traffic to Adland is going to grow for the rest of 1999 and
during 2000.

So If you think,  you have an interesting success story to tell, please send
it to digest as usual and indicate as such.
At the end of 1999  I will create web page and will invite everybody
to vote for the "Success Story Of The Year"

To be eligible for the prize,  this story has to be from your own
experience.

From: Ward Dougherty <geno@aeneas.net>

Thanks for taking time to read this. My Product is Glasses Float, which is a
lanyard with a trendy float that attaches to the ear pieces of your glasses
and sunglasses, so when they fall into the Lake or Ocean they will FLOAT,
not sink, untill they can be retrieved.  I invented Glasses Float from the
old saying "Necessity is the Mother of Invention". My family and I
bought a condo at Pleasant Place at Buchanan's Resort on Kentucky
Lake,  about 15 minutes east of our house in Paris, Tennessee, in
1993. During that first summer, my family, alone, lost reading glasses,
sunglasses, prescription glasses , etc. to the bottom of good ole Kentucky
Lake. The same was the case of our friends, new acquaintances, etc.
We looked for, and tried, different lanyards, other products that were
supposed to float your glassses, but would only hold up lighter glasses.......
I discussed the problem with many people that summer, and got the
same basic answer, " I wish I had $1.00 for every pair of glasses lost
to the bottom of Kentucky Lake, alone."

To make a long story short, I invented Glasses Float, and started marketing
them May, 1994. I did all the marketing primarily myself, and only part time,
as I had a full time job as well as other responsibilities. But there was a
need  in the market place for Glasses Float, and I was anxious to build it.
I slowly started building my sales from nothing to a decent level, for part
time marketing  efforts. I then decided that it was time, after four years of
growth, as well as  being affordable, in our Glasses Float budget, to get our
own Glasses Float Website on the internet. We ventured out May of 1998 with
http://www.glassesfloat.com and I will make another story short. The Website
has increased our first ten months of sales, on the internet, 900% over what
we had been able to do ourselves the first four (4) years alone, and on a
part  time basis.

The Internet is a fantastic medium for many kinds of businesses to reach
out to that almost unreachable "Market Place". Whether it be our situation
or anybody's, the Internet is, and will continue ( as it expotentally grows )
to be that unique medium to have a home business, to a multi-million dollar
company, and be able to have a very unique and effective "Marketing Tool".

Many things have really made an impression on me these past ten months with
our Website Internet Business. First, the Internet is like anything else in
life.
"It Take Hard Work, And Many Hours" to build your Internet business. Also,
I have been so amazed that I have met so many fantastic people in my journey,
these past ten months, in building Glasses Float Website. In fact, if it
hadn't been for so many fantastic people that we have come across, and the
basic attitude of the majority.......I will help you, we wouldn't have made it
near as far  as we have been able to these past ten months.

We invite everyone to visit our Website at http://www.glassesfloat.com
if only to say a friendly, Hi.

Regards,
Ward

Both my husband and I signed - him under me. I ran his number for two
weeks in a row in our newsletter and ran ads, posted FFA's etc. on
mine (lots of ads).

His was growing nicely (22 sign-ups plus growning downline) and mine
did absolutely nothing! I switched this week and put my number in the
newsletter - bingo four new sign-ups and counting. It's a bit
surprising because the newsletter is not business related at all but
rather controvercial.

I don't think there's anything wrong with their system. I think it's
advertising to jaded, info overloaded marketers that is weak.

Finally, concerning the continuing posts about AllAdvantage, let me say
that I have been contacted by phone a couple of times by them now, and
there does seem to be a real effort to get the program up and running
correctly.  How successful that effort will be remains to be seen.  In
the meantime, I advise people who have the sort of problem reported by
Doug Steinke (which was very similar to my own problems with the
company), to e-mail alan@alladvantage.  This is the guy who called me,
and he's in charge of "fixing" the thousands of problems they've had,
caused by response overload.  Don't expect an instant fix, but my

I signed with AllAdvantage at the beginning of the month and have had
several people sign up under me and others under them.

I found the best way to promote this opportunity is to send out the email
letters that are supplied by AllAdvantage with just a little note of my own
at the beginning.  If I receive an offer by email from someone I check out
their offer and also send them information on the AllAdvantage plan.

I also have the URL in my signature file that goes on every email.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but it has worked for me.

>the limitations, etc. Are they worth the money? What is the

>one that submits to 1000?

Hello Scott & Adland Subscribers:

A lot of people will probably tell you that these are overdone,
and that you should "concentrate on the big search engines".

I decided to purchase one of these submission programs because
some of the "big" search engines assess  linkback rate as part of how
they value your site. With other search engines such as Goto
and Alta Vista now charging for listing, I figured I would give
this software a try. For me, the software was a good decision.
Clients I use it for see a substantial jump in traffic after submitting.

One difference to look for is whether the software submits
you by url alone, or does it have a cgi interface that allows
you to submit by keywords, subject, category, etc.  If you would
like a personal recommendation as to which I chose, please
feel welcome to send me an email!

Linda Caroll

Dear Bogdan,

I have a few comments regarding  Adland Digest #89.  First, the
translator problems described by Elizabeth Scott reconfirmed my wife's
opinion of these programs.  My wife is German, and works for a
German-owned firm here in Illinois.  One of the American company
officers she works for bought a translator program (using company money,
of course), which cost over three thousand dollars.  He often wants her
opinion of his "translated" e-mails.  Usually, the results are simply
baffling.  Occasionally, they will be hilarious, so that's worth a
little money, but probably not $3,000.

Response from Editor.

I'm getting each day several messages like yours
(in respect to placing links to Adland) and have to admit that
I'm not responding any more to those inquiries as this turned out
to be a task in itself.

I'm always interested in more links to Adland but verity of automatic
tools out there and new people joining internet each day, makes it impossible
to explain how to update web pages not knowing how particular system
works and what is level of understanding of usage of that system
by person in question.

To try to answer your question: Whatever your system is, you have to
modify html code of the page where you want to place your code.
The code which you are getting from Adland is link  containing button
size  clickable  image  and under that link pointing
to http://www.adlandpro.com/default.asp?rep=YourID

Clicking on underling link or banner will bring you to Adland and your reference
id will be passed from page to page so you can get credits given for
visitor and his/her  activities at Adland.
Further it will depend on your tool for html modification how you do your
update.
In simplest form you are taking the code provided and place it into your html
page
through your editing tool

E.g.

If your page looks like this

----------------------------------------
<html>

<head>
</head>
<body>

Some content of your page here.

</body>
</html>
------------------------------------------

you would take code provided from your sign-up and place it  like this

--------------------------------------------
<html>

<head>
</head>
<body>

Some content of your page here.

<!-- BEGIN ADLAND BANNER CODE -->

<!-- END  ADLAND BANNER CODE -->

Some content of your page here.

</body>
</html>
-----------------------------------------------

Banner to Adland should look like this

I would appreciate if others  could give some input here and maybe
provide some links to sites which go over this issues in easy to
understand way. I could create help page for those who needed it
based on that.

From: Doug Titchmarsh <doug@titchmarsh.com>

Misty asked for a review of her site at
http://mysiteinc.com/mchavis/utalk.html.
I made the same mistake of trying to put too many banners for affiliate
programs on one page in an attempt to make some money. The result is that
the page takes so long to load, and with no real meat to it, that no one
stays around to click on any of the banners (although you may get the
occasional webmaster looking to do the same kind of thing!). It would be
better to create a site with a theme and then add an affiliate program which
fits in with the theme. I saw a South Park ad on the site why not try a
South Park theme ?  You could even use a banner rotation service throughout
a site to rotate your other affiliates banners (try
http://www.adsrotaion.com which allows several different sets of rotated
banners)on every page you only get one banner but it's different on each
page. I have found a much better response from the themed site (I set up two
different themes so far.) I hope this helps you.

Thanks for your time

From: "Robert Lee" <webmaster@alovelinksplus.com>

Dear Bogdan,
Here we go again........... :-(
<snip>
I have a couple of sights that I would like to get feed back on.
Misty
</snip>

Now serving #1,678,000,000 affiliate program sites to make you money.
Misty, pick one or two affiliate programs, ADD CONTENT, REAL CONTENT
and start again.
No matter how much you promote such sites, all you get are people looking
to make money the same way that you are, posting a lot of banners and
waiting for the heavens to deliver some money. This DOES NOT HAPPEN.
The affiliate programs that you have promote better than you can, so usually
the visitors that you get are already signed up, or are new at internet marketing
and just copy your site and hopes.
Go to a search engine, any search engine, and enter in the keywords that you
have on your page. Then take a look at the places that are listed. You may get
an idea for an ORIGINAL SITE, and hopefully make some money.
Good Luck!

To the Adlands Audience:
The types of pages that fall into the category above are littered with banners
to make you money. Probably some will if you put real effort into it. This means
create content around each and every affiliate program that you sign up for.
They should be on their own page, with their own keywords and meta tags,
with your own comments of how and why someone should sign-up for any
particular program or information source.
It takes a lot of work to make affiliate programs grow, and they can earn you
a decent wage, if you do it right.
Happy Selling!

What's in a Name?
by Joe Reinbold

Many entrepreneurs, whether it be on the Net or off, in their
haste to get started, fail to sit down and think of the future
and/or some of the problems they may encounter. One area, which
is one that I have gotten many questions about over the years,
is the question of whether they should use just their own name
or a business name. Either one is okay, but you have to think
of several things first.

A number of years ago I started publishing a tabloid newspaper
called "The Clipboard". At the time, for business purposes I
used the name J.F. Reinbold, which of course is my name. I used
a personal checking account, which was cheaper. But as
my business started expanding, I started to receive increased
advertising orders and some of the checks were coming in made out
to the "Clipboard" which was the name of the newspaper. This was
occuring even though I clearly stated on the order form to make
payments out to J.F. Reinbold. And guess what, my bank wouldn't
cash them because "The Clipboard" was a separate entity and it
wasn't listed on my account. And because it was a business, I
would have to open a business account in order to cash the checks.
In addition I would have to present a DBA(Doing Business
As) certificate to the bank from the county showing I was doing
business as "The Clipboard". So for a while I was returning checks
and asking for new ones.

You might want to check out your local banking policies before
you use some unique business name and start getting checks made
out to that name. Also check out your local requirements for getting
a DBA certificate. It might be called by a different name around
the country. Getting one here was pretty simple. We just went
to the county offices, filled out the application, checked the
county files to make sure that the names weren't in use and then
paid $60 for them to process the certificate.

Then it was on to the bank to open up a business checking account.
You need to shop around for those too. The fees were different at
all the banks I went to and some of them really penny and dime
you to death. So make sure you shop around. And each of them
required a copy of the DBA certificate.

Once you register your business name with the county, it becomes
a matter of public record. In our area there are a couple of
newspapers that list new businesses in a news column each week.
They list the name of the company, the owner and the address.
This can generate questions from neighbors, so be aware of what
can happen. You might also want to check whether you might need
a Sales Tax Certificate if your State has a sales tax. Tax people
read the newspaper too.

If you are going to apply for a merchant account so that you can
accept credit cards online or offline, they may require some
business documentation too. Most may want to see a DBA certificate,
business license and/or sales tax certificate to show you are a
valid business.

So what's my point? This! Before you launch your new business, draw
up a little plan covering the things you need to check out. Don't
just think up a name, get the web site up and running and then find
you have some problems. Check out some of the basics I mentioned
above. If you are serious about the business and not doing it as
just a hobby, do it right in the beginning. I would hate to see you
get a very successful business off the ground and have some serious
problems with some of the Federal, State and/or local authorities
or your banking people. Believe me, I know it's a pain, but doing
a little homework will payoff in the long run!

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Jokes provided by Robert Jackson <robj5@centuryinter.net>

A market researcher called at a house and his knock was answered
by a young woman with three small children running around her.
He asked her if she minded replying to his questions and when she
agreed,  he asked her if she knew his company, Cheeseborough-Ponds.
When she said no, he mentioned that among their many products was
Vaseline and she acknowledged that she certainly knew of that product.
When asked if she used it, the answer was "Yes, we use it when we
have sexual intercourse."
The interviewer was amazed.  He said, "I always ask that question
because everyone uses our product and they always say they use it
for the child's bicycle chain, or the gate hinge or some other
purpose; but I know that most people really use it for sexual
intercourse, they just don't like to say so.  Since you've been so
frank, could you tell me exactly how you use it?"
"We put it on the doorknob to keep the kids out."
