From: Mark Rae <barefoot@bekkers.com.au>

Hello Adland Subscribers.

This isn't quite THE success story, however, to start at the beginning... I
am physically disabled and as a result, I am receiving a pension. Through
family, I met a local pharmacist who had invented creams from food, which
aid in healing and skin maintenance. He required a website to get his
products out into the global market. We came to the agreement that I would
set up and maintain his Internet presence, for as long as necessary. To
begin with my services would be free, until his business expanded, and then
I would have a full time position with his company. With a fair amount of
poetic licence and a host of Internet skills, I set about constructing a
website for 6 products. Being amongst my first attempts at web site creation
and design... this site was clumsy and reeked of over-formatting. The order
form wasn't secure, and the server, based in Perth Western Australia, was
intolerably slow. However I had effectively used meta tags, and manually
submitted to as many search engines as possible, starting with a list
compiled by Beaucoup

My next attempt, this time with a little financial backing, went a bit
smoother. Taking into consideration many aspects of marketing on the net, I
decided that speed, and security would be the primary focus. We opted for a
store with ViaWeb, who then got bought out by Yahoo. Although we had less
control over some of the html, the security, tracking, and management
functions offered a nice compromise. Albeit expensive and sterile, the
website does it's job until we can afford a team of professional designers.
What we find important is the dissemination of information from our site.
Most of our customers are already sold on 4 of the products. We offer a
secure environment for them to purchase them, and an opportunity to
investigate our full catalogue. I'm not saying our site was an instant
success... we had traffic and sales, but not enough to justify my
employment.

Using IRC (Internet Relay Chat), Newsgroups, and Trade Websites, I looked
for people and business that import our type of products. Utilising free
online services regularly, such as Olav Hellese-Knutsen's Free URL
Submission Script I managed to get our website ranked fairly high on most of
the popular search engines. I used the query terms from my customer trails,
to tailor the meta tags for the website, and for defining keywords for
submissions. At the same time I was seeking editorial support of  trade
journals, and general magazines in the beauty and cosmetic industries. One
magazine that had published a news article in the past about this inventor,
responded by asking for an article on his discoveries. Upon publishing in
this magazine, our hit rate increased tenfold, and my daily emails rose from
2 - 3 per day to over 30 a day. The orders too have increased, so much in
fact that we have been able to lower all our prices, to obviously enhance
more sales. We have repeat customers within days of receiving their orders,
The store is finally paying for itself, and, as originally intended,
functioning as an effective office tool. So where's the success you say?

With the combination of new products, positive editorials in various
magazines, and a functional website that acts as a virtual employee 24hrs a
day. From home, I have managed to make contact with consumers, retailers,
and wholesalers from all corners of the globe. I have been instrumental in
moving a company into the global market, and out of it all,... I have
secured myself a fulltime job that is suited to my disability, my wife and
children are always close by, and I don't have the pressure of traffic or
working to the clock.

In a way, I have achieved that "Work at home in your underwear" dream.

Thank you for your time
Mark Rae

Subject:Customer reminder

Hi all,
I am wondering if any of you Adlanders are able to help us. We are looking
for a "customer reminder " proggie.
By that I mean a programme where we are able to offer a date reminder
service to our customers. You probably have come across them in your
travels. You enter your email and date/s you wish to remember and you are
then sent an email reminder prior to the preselected date/s.
I have been trialling a free one but have some concerns in that it is
stored off site, so we don't receive the customers information, and are
reliant on other people to provide the service. Also we have no control to
ensure our customers email and information is kept private from third
parties.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Fiona

Subject:CD ROM packed with Ecommerce help guides

I'm not sure if this counts as too much of an advertisements but I have
recently completed a CD ROM which is packed with Ecommerce help guides,
software, etc.  I have worked on this CD for just under two years so it is
very resourceful.  To get the word out about it I am offering this CD for
absolutely free.  I have even figured out a way so that S&H is free, simply
by asking those who want to recieve it to register in a couple of
sweepstakes.  By doing so it generates proper shipping costs.  Unfortunatley
I can only offer this to people in the US and Canada due to the high cost of
international shipping.

Subject: Using Sweepstakes or Drawings for Promotion

Hi everyone,

This is my first post to the Adlands Digest.  I am interested in using a
sweepstakes or drawing to promote my Web site.  I would like to do this
myself; I am not talking about using someone else's contest (e.g. e-Lotto)
to promote my site.  However, there is one thing that makes me hesitant.
Whenever I see a sweepstakes being used for promotional purposes, there is
usually a long list of rules written in legalese.  I want to make sure that
whatever I do is 100% legal.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places to look for more information on
using a sweepstakes or drawing as a promotional tool?  What would be
particularly helpful is information on how to structure the sweepstakes so
as to minimize the possibility of legal problems.

From: Bruce Ian Coy <minotaur@soltec.net>

Site review of Misty's affiliate site:

I can't claim to be an internet marketing expert, but it seems to me
that you've made three obvious mistakes on this site.  First, the top
banner seems to be the culprit in making the page too wide, which forces
people to scroll horizantally when they look at it.  This problem is a
big no-no, and is the reason that Bryan Marsden was so upset with
FreeYellow's oversized banner on his site (see his post in Adland Digest
#89).  Make the banner smaller.

Second, you have light blue script on a grey background, which is almost
unreadable.  The "fix" for this problem is obvious and necessary.

Third, although you apologize for it as the page is loading, you really
need to do away with the fancy artwork that makes the page load so
slowly.  A related point is that you would probably do better with text
links to your affiliate programs than having all of those banners (at
least one of which didn't load when I viewed the site).  Not only would
the page load more quickly, but without the "added value" of your own
carefully-written testimonials, there is little to distinguish your page
from thousands of others offering lots of affiliate banners.

A final point:  when I first tried to view your sites, your server was
down and I couldn't get to them.  Does that happen often?  If so, it's a
problem that would defy any "fix".   No matter how good your site is, if
people can't get to it, it won't generate anything but frustration.

Hope these comments help,
Bruce Coy

USING SAFELISTS TO MARKET ONLINE
By Larry Stepanowicz

In looking for ways to market their products and services, many
online marketers are using safelists -- also called secure lists
-- in their advertising mix. For some, who prefer e-mail
marketing but don't want to be accused of spamming, the use of
these secure lists has become their primary if not only means of
marketing.

What is a safe or secure list? It's an opt-in list, to be sure,
except that unlike the usual opt-in list which is assembled for
the exclusive use of its compiler, a safelist is assembled   for
the use of all who subscribe to it. Joining a safelist is like
joining a club.

How Do Safelists Work?

As a member of a safe list, you are free to send your e-mail
promotions to all members of the list. The frequency with which
you can send messages varies from once a day to once a week,
depending on the list, with many allowing senders 2 to 3 messages
per week. List size      also varies, though most lists seem to
have several hundred members.

As a member, your offers will be broadcast, but since all members
agree to receive e-mail from each other without making
accusations of spam, you will also get mail -- a lot of mail. For
this reason, experienced subscribes set up a separate e-mail
account or AOL screen name to keep their list mail separate from
the rest.

Do the lists themselves work?

I was able to make $1500 with one of my programs in about 5-6
weeks, and sponsored 24 into another within one week, starting
out, with safe lists. Of course, a lot depends on the program
and your skill in presenting it, along with the number of people
you can reach through the lists to which you subscribe. The more
lists, in your arsenal, the more exposure you'll generate.

While some lists continue to be free, most are or have become
affiliate programs that charge a membership fee to join and pay
commissions to those who promote them. Fees seem to be in the $25
range, though I've paid as little as $5 and as much as $45 to
join.

If interested in exploring this area of Internet marketing,
you'll find links to some of the better lists I've found at:

Note from Editor

I receive every day bunch of emails starting like this....

"You are receiving this email because we are members of the
same safe list....."

I never joined any of the safe lists and always considered
this type of introduction as another way of getting me interested
in reading spam. As far as I'm concerned Safe Lists or majority of
them are just harvested email address and those who sell them
just invented another way of getting them to the masses.

I would like to be wrong with my assumption but the fact that
I never joined  such a list and received tons of emails with
above introduction doesn't give me a choice to think otherwise.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

It was the day of the big sale. Rumors of the sale (and some
advertising)were the main reason for the long line that formed by 8:30,
the store's opening time. In front of the store.
A small man pushed his way to the front of the store, only to be pushed
back, amid loud and colorful curses. On the man's second attempt, he was
punched square in the jaw, and knocked around a bit, and then thrown to
the end of the line again. As he got up the second time, he said to the
person at the end of the line, "That does it, if they hit me one more
time, I don't open the store."
