Greetings All

Welcome  (151)  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

I hope you had nice break from Adland Digest for couple of days. But this has its
price ;-)
Now you got to read more posts than usually  in one issue. This is as much as I could
fit into one mailing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please visit this page
http://www.adlandpro.com/help/results.asp
This is updated information regarding effectiveness of ad headlines of ads run
at Adland Classifieds. I use unit of  measure called CTR (click thru ratio) . This is
percentage of clicks per  1000 impressions. You should realize that current
average CTR is about 0.5-1%.
Some ad headings  which are listed on the above page will have CTR as high
as 9% and many  will be well above 4% . This is due to the fact that those ads
are highly targeted. Many classifieds sites  (and Adland belongs to them) are
frequently visited by Internet entrepreneurs  who are submitting their ads.
While they visit the site to post their business opportunity , they are presented
with ads which are displayed always on top of the pages (hard to miss) .
If those ads are offering other business opportunities or ways of effective
advertising they are  getting hits.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you think,  you have an interesting success story to tell, please send
it to digest as usual and indicate as such.
At the end of 1999  I will create web page and will invite everybody
to vote for the "Success Story Of The Year"
Best voted story will receive one FREE year of advertising
in the form of  small button at the bottom of each Adland page.
Adland  receives  320,000 page viewings , 57,000 unique
visitors  and grows on average 20% each month.

To be eligible for the prize, this story has to be from your own
experience.

========================Site Review Requests (2)========================
------------------------------(1)--------------------------------------
From: Carl Rasnic  <dkonstatska@iol.cz>

Hello Bogdan,

I've been a subscriber of your Adland newsletter for about 1 1/2 months
now and love it very much.
I received an award today for my site from DailyHOTsite telling me that
I had been nominated and
unanimously selected for the DailyHOTsite Pick-of-the-Day award.
I was quite flabbergasted to receive such an award for three reasons.
One, I am 65 years old.
Two, this was the first site I ever built.
Three, even though I've used computers for a long time, I was always on
the receiving end of them.
I had never tried to run a business myself on the internet.  However, I
got bored in retirement and  decided to venture forth into the great world
of capitalism and see if  maybe I could actually pick up a few shekels to
supplement my income.
Well, to make a long story short (or am I too late for that?) I searched
the net for help on HTML and found an astounding amount of free help out
there. (I also found some sites that have a fantastic amount of help for a
very reasonable fee-usually around $20 per year or so).
I plunged in and tried to learn enough to at least have some semblance
of understanding of the basics. I'm glad I did learn a little about the
basics of HTML because it stood me in pretty good stead when I developed
my page.  I actually used the page wizard at my free web page to build
the page, but I added a few twists and turns of my own here and there.
I'm requesting this review because I want to make it even better.  Oh!
Yes, I've heard the saying "If it works, don't fix it." but the internet
is so dynamic, that if one sits on his laurels, he's already behind.
So, if any of your readers would be kind enough to review the site and
tell me what they like and don't like and why, I'd be very grateful. I
will read each review faithfully. Good or bad.  I'm human though and I
don't like being badmouthed anymore than anyone else. Keep it
professional, please.

Thanks fellow readers and netizens.

one page?)

Subject:Free Advertising of Self-Replicating Sites

Hello Bogdan and everyone,

Response to Matthew Daniel regarding the use of replicator sites.
The only solution is to build bridge pages, entry pages or whatever
you want to call them so you can control everything from your site
respective of the advertising, linking, promoting, even search
engines. You can develop a whole site this way with only a link to
the featured replicator page.
Unfortunately, for you Matthew is that you also are design
challenged. In this case contact me by email and see what I can do
for you.

(snip)
A lot of MLM and other programs give you
a personal web site which looks exactly like the site from which you
signed up (a self-replicating site).  I have found this to be a great
feature since I am not an expert at web design.  The problem with
those types of sites, however, is that they cannot be changed and this
eliminates a lot of free advertising opportunities.  For example, a
lot of advertising services require you to put their link or banner ad
on your site in order to display your ad.  This cannot be done because
you are not allowed to change anything about the site.  Has anyone
figured out how to get around this problem without busting your wallet
to do so?  Any advice would be appreciated

Subject:Free Advertising of Self-Replicating Sites

Matthew daniel asked about self replicating sites and advertising sites
requesting banners in exchange.
How about using a free webspace provider such as my free office and creating
a frameset, and framing the replicated site, and putting the banner on the
other part of the frame. Then promote the url of the frame. The advertising
provider gets their link and you get your advertised page still shown, and
you decide wether to frame top or bottom for the banner. If you need some
help with frames I can dig out some examples for you to use (or use a demo
version of a program which allows you to create them)

Thanks for your time

Hi Melanie,

I've seen a number of comments about posting to FFA pages, and almost all
of them were negative.  The only positive comments seem to come from people
selling software or a service for posting to these pages.

I've heard that posting manually gets you better results.  That would make
sense if the FFA sites allowed only manual submissions because it would
increase the probability of someone actually seeing your link.

I'd like to think that there's some value in posting to FFA pages, but it's
probably very low.  Considering the flood of confirmation e-mails that a
serious posting effort would generate, I'm not sure it's worth it.

On another note:  Do any of you think that the FFA Links Blaster is a
waste of time?  I mean it appears to this one that all it does is post
links to pages that noone ever really looks at...you simply get a ton
of ads sent back to you via autoresponder....it doesn't seem very well
thought out to me.  The FFA pages seem very obscure...like who ever
goes searching through them?
</snip>

As everything else on the web, the FFA pages have gone through many
transitions as to how to utilize them bes. Currently it is not
posting to them, because you are correct, but in actually having one
or two of your own, then the autoresponders will be sending out your
ad, the ones you are currently reading, will be sent to everyone who
posts on your site(s).
This is not a panacea and will not bring in big bucks fast but it can
be effective in getting some responses. Just another tool that can be
used in your total arsenal.

In reading many of the various messages that have been posted, I see the
recurring theme of "finding the best advertising medium". I have been
on-line for about three years now, and have used numerous mediums to
promote my business. True, I do get response from assorted on-line
advertisements, banner sharing, and newsgroups, I still believe targeted
direct mail has been by far the most cost effective. In fact so, that I
developed my own in-house ad agency that grew into a new full time venture
in its self.
I specifically use targeted mailings which are an excellent way to gauge
exact performance of my offer. I always include my web address, and within
one week on my mailing notice the increase in on line orders.

Dear Bogdan,
I'm rather new to the world of online marketing but in the short time I have
been working online I learned 2 important words..
TARGET and FREEBIES.
Words I am sure you are more than familiar with. Everyone here on the digest
has their own market..I offer online casinos and shopping on my site..I had
to think really hard about where to put my advertising money.
This is what has worked best for me..FREE Penny Keno Gold
http://www.kenogames.com/pennykeno/gold-sponsor-133.htm
I was guaranteed over 9,000 HITS (not impressions) in 3 months..I actually
received over 10,000.
Ok..that got people to my site..but how to keep them there or better yet
bookmark my site and come back at their leisure and really take a look around
was another hurdle.
I offer freebies and lot's of em. Not just anything..I search every day and
try dozens but only choose a few select ones for my site. I like to look for
something new. Best of all, it's working!
If anyone at Adlands has any freebies (they have to be fun) they think I
should take a look at please feel free to send them on over.
Thanks for your time and I hope this helps.

Gayle Hansen  asked about setting up a website and accepting credit cards.
Set up a business website on HYPERMART for free at http://www.hypermart.net
(they will also host a domain name if you have one) For accepting credit
cards why not use a service such as clickbank  at http://www.clickbank.com
who will accept credit cards for you with no sign up or monthly fees
although they take a percentage from each transaction. They have full
instructions on setting up your site to accept credit cards through them.
This is an ideal way to start out accepting credit cards as you only pay
when you sell.  I hope this helps

I've only been "on the net" about a year now, but have
already been through 3 servers, and have tried multiple
"FREE" sites!

I've found that just like everything else - you get what you
pay for, but I DID finally find a viable solution called
eworks/mympc.

When I signed up with them, they had my domain pointed within
12 hours!! They have a great online manual that "walks" you
through setting up your website, that even a novice like me
could understand. (I've found a lot of them very user UN-friendly!)

There is a very low-cost involved for their service.  Right now,
you can use their service FREE for 30 days, then just pay 2
payments of $80 - AND THAT'S IT! Or, you can choose the option
I did and pay within a week for a total of $100. (This is a
limited time offer by the way.)

For your money you get 200mgs. of space, installed links page,
(which advertises the hosting for you when people post)
installed message board, self-replicating software, secure
server, advertising resources built-in to your representative
site, and several useful FREE software downloads.

They also pay you 40% straight commission on any sales you
make, and offer other hosting packages you can offer your clients.

I know this sounds like a "pitch", but after all the hassles
I've been through, believe me I'm sold on these guys. Oh . . .
the server is really fast and powerful, too, and they have
great tech support!

Subject: Too far to turn backnow".

This is in response to the article by John Ellis- " Too far to turn back
now". John gives all the good "stuff" a person has to dig out of
himself/herself to keep going , don't give up, be persistant,etc. I
personally have ALL these traits, spend 3-4 hours/day on promotion, have
paid advertising, paid promotion, paid target advertising, good search
engine placement on all the engines,etc. Above all, I believe in my
product! I've even said to scores of people that it's " Too far to turn
back now" and " I'm not throwing away all this hard work now!" My site
receives 600/800 hits/mo. for past 6 mos. and I've sold to 2 customers over
the net! I receive lots of compliments, requests for info, etc. Then
REALITY starts to set in, I'm going broke, no more money for promotion,
house payment,food,phone,gas,etc. You've borrowed just about all you can
from friends and family,you're tapped out! NO more resources!
You keep saying " I can't give up now"- "I've worked too hard on this".
REALITY steps in again and you start to realize that you're beating a dead
horse! I've talked to way too many people trying to make a living selling
their product in my related target group ( which is very large and growing)
that AREN"T making many sales off internet. REALITY sets in again, I've got
to go back to work or loose the house! I'm not giving up and will maintain
an internet presence HOWEVER I'll go back to work and save some money for
some "good" magazine advertising and also some of the tried and true forms
of advertising. My point is this, I think most of us have the guts and
inspiration to try and get something going. John's words of wisdom are fine
and dandy but REALITY will decide what happens in the end!!!!  Print this!

Note from Editor.

Scott,

Although you sound determined you also sound bitter.
This is little note from me to  give you extra encouragement.

When we first define our goals, they don't have to be the same,  one or two
years later. In order to be able to get some directions we need to make list
of them  and try to implement them as hard as possible. As we go and try to
reach them, we will need to make corrections or maybe shift a little bit
from our way if  what we planned is either out of our reach or we learn that this
is not exactly what  we wanted  to do.
There is one thing though which is being developed all the time when we work
on our goals.
This is our experience. We are learning what works what doesn't. Amazingly this
experience can be applied to number of other settings and most of the time it works.

In order to learn and progress,  we need to be exposed to challenges and crises.
We need to be able to find way out from difficult situations  and handle them with grace.
This can be only achieved when we are on our own and we have to take
responsibility for our decisions, when  we get hit because of our uneducated guess
or to quick click on the wrong button or failing to read  fine lines.

When I started Adland Classifieds, over 1.5 year ago for almost 1 year I didn't
get paid single penny for my work or time spent in front of the computer browsing
internet, writing new routines, trying to figure out  what is it what can work for me.
During last year and half I learned many technical skills  in respect to the internet
but what is even more important I learned marketing knowledge through newsletters
discussion groups and my own trial and error approach.

1. Adland Digest
2. Adland affiliate program
3. Responding to users suggestions regarding site usage
4. Reading numerous articles
5. Applying for awards and receiving them
6. Exchanging links with other sites
7. Offering free promotion to many Internet friends

all this contributed to  many contacts and visitors confidence to pay for
advertising at Adland.

I earned many powerful partners who are happy with using my services and are
providing me with stable income so I can concentrate on  new features to the site.

Just six months since I started charging for my service, my revenue for April was over
$20,000 CAD with only   $1,000 CAD overhead and my plan is  $250,000 in revenue
for this year.

If I would quit 6 months ago what would be my conclusion about doing business on
the Internet?
But I never even though about quitting. I just knew, that one day I'm going to
be rewarded for my ideas and work.

Be just persistent, learn everyday something and apply it to your situation.
Earlier or later you will get paid for it.

B. F.

From: Brian Garvin bkgarvin@adnc.com
Subject: Two-Tier Affiliate Program Question

Dear List Members,

This posting is regarding affiliate programs. They seem to be popping up
everywhere, and seem to be the new trend on the internet. I read
somewhere that almost 25% of all sales generated on the internet last
year were done through affiliate programs. That number is expected to
increase as time goes on.

We are working on getting a Two-Tier affiliate program set-up so someone
can sell my product, without investing a dime in the product. This gives
everyone a chance to earn profits without the risk of monetary
investment. Currently my sales are just trickling, but I think they will
rapidly increase with this program in place. You will just have to copy
& paste some simple HTML code to your website, and you can start
collecting orders in minutes. Many people who don't want to dish out up
front money would prefer this option over having to spend money upfront,
and that's why we are putting together this program.

What I am trying to get is opinions as to how to set up the affiliate
program. This will be a nice one, because it pays through 2 levels. I
had two things in mind, and please give me your input as to the best
option.

The first option would be to set it up where the CD gets sold for
$99.95. As an affiliate, you would get paid $40.00 for each sale
generated from your Website. In addition, you would also have the
ability to sign up sub-affiliates (with no effort), you would ALSO get
paid 10% of the total of all the sales that your sub-affiliates
generated from their website. BTW, everything is automated, so you just
leave everything on your website and sell.

The second option would be to give you as an affiliate $25.00 for each
sale generated from your website. In addition, you would ALSO get paid
25% of the total of all the sales that sub-affiliates generated from
their websites. BTW, their will be an easy to use interface available to
check the sales of your sub-affiliates, so you would always know who
signed up or purchased a CD under you.

Which option do you think would be best? I need some feedback please, as
this program is being created for the benefit of all netizens. I'm
hoping that the program will be completed and operational in 3 months.
This program is possible by the power of a CGI dealer tracking script.

Thanks in advance for your input. I'm looking forward to some terrific
responses!
