Thanks Doug,
I agree wholeheartedly. Few things are more aggravating than to open a
dozen emails each morning that start with "I saw your ad" ..... One
gentleman emailed me in response to this question directly saying
something like, "I consider them spammers of the worst kind." His
response is to immediately reply to their message telling them that he
will only look at their offer if the visit his site and email him with
his Site Counter Totals and the day and time they visited. Not a bad
idea.
Unfortunately, I am afraid that the only ways to deal with this type of
spamming is: 1) Ignore
2) Retaliate as described above.
In spite of this, I am SOLD on the internet .... I am sold on marketing
on the internet. It is not so much "Selling" as it is "Sorting".
Bogdan, I appreciate your forum here for us to share ideas and

Hello Andy,
Here's my answer your
question you posted in the Adland Digest.
>Hello all!
>I would like to hear of your experiences in using e-mail lists for
>direct marketing purposes. Any tips?
There is no way to evaluate what you are getting when you use these "lists"
. You are promised "safe" , "fresh names" etc. .... they all say this.
From
my experience, I got negative results. I am of the impression that this
method is very badly abused.
If you must use this method, then go with reputable agencies (and there are
a few). Of course, there are also better ways to reach prospects. Bottom
Line ? if your company is as good as you claim, then promote it with style
and class .... NOT some cheap, unknown mailing list.

MY REPLY: ADVERTISING METHODS
Sorry if I'm rehashing a bit here, but I just joined this list a few weeks
ago, so I may have missed it. From my experience, there are THREE formats
that really work, or at least have worked for me endlessly. I know everyone
has heard about search engines, but they work. I'm consistently in the top
20 with 3 of my pages each week on at least two of the search engines. (NO,
I don't spam or duplicate my pages). Second, I use the only true banner
exchange, that gives a one to one ration + cash - this means for every ONE
banner shown, you get ONE CLICK THRU (not showing!) plus I earn cash on
every click thru. The other link exchange programs offer a 2 to 1 ratio,
meaning your banner is SHOWN once for every TWO banners you show, not click
thru. (And you don't earn extra cash!) Whether you're an affiliate or not,
it still works the same way at http://www.bannerco-op.com/dime-co/
BUT THE BEST format that has REALLY worked for me is offering a free
Subscription to my ezine (weekly newsletter). Most people wonder how to start
off with this - its not as hard as it sounds! I started mine (The Biz Opp
Ezine)
found at http://www.dime-co.com/bizopps.htm in October of 1997. I
emailed a
few people I'd dealt with (about 30) for other business and asked them if they'd
be interested in subscribing to help me out. 90% did. To start, I offered
unlimited free adsGradually my subscriber base grew, but each issue grew to
100+ ads, and one article. The drawback to this was many submitted more
than one ad. I stipulated you must become a subscriber to place a free
ad. A fair trade I thought. Unfortunately, several used fake addresses in
their ubscriptions.
Because of the duplication, I stopped unlimited free ads, but by that time
I'd grown to a few hundred subscribers I emailed weekly. And now, I only give
free ads to those who put a link on their site referring to my ezine! (They
must be
susbscribers too). I put the ezine on haitus for over 9 months due to family
health
(and death of a family member), leaving at 450 subscribers. When I returned to
the ezine, my subscriber base had GROWN to almost 1100!! And now, our issues
only include 5 - 10 paid ads, and are content oriented! We get people emailing
after each issue telling me how they enjoyed it, asking if they can submit
articles, or requesting information.
An ezine isn't that difficult IF you are willing to spend a few hours each
Week putting it together. Just make sure people can subscribe and unsubscribe
fairly easily. You can use a good listserver such as one found at
webpromote.com
if you only post once a week or less. People can automatically subscribe
and unsubscribe. Sorry if I'm a little longwinded, but the truth is an ezine
works. Why? Because people OPT-IN. Yes, FFA Links pages get lots of
email
addresses to use, but I'm sure most of those ask to be removed very quickly
if they receive more than one email from the person. With my ezine, it
rarely happens (maybe 5 removal requests per week, but I get a lot more in
new susbscribers to counteract that)!
As you have done with Adland digest, you HAVE to get people involved. You
HAVE to be willing to review posts, even if you don't include them. You
HAVE to encourage your readers to email you. Include contests for them,
freebies, or surveys. I conducted a brief survey a few weeks ago - we had a
whopping 450+ responses within 48 hrs!!
And now, we know how to base and expand our current promotions. If anyone
wants to start a newsletter, please feel free to email me for free help! It
really works. If you think about the number of new subscribers who found your
ezine by referral, think about the possibilities of every new program you start!
If anyone would like some help getting an ezine started, they can email me
for free help and kick off tactics.

Hi,
We've been using NorthStar as a third party credit card acceptance
company for about 6 months now. I'm *very* pleased with them.
We had originally planned to change over to our own merchant account
when the number of sales warranted the standard $50 for our own
account.
Well, we're *way* past that and have been. But they are such a good
service, they are worth sticking with. It's so easy. They confirm
everything, you get your orders almost instantly and they'll even
provide you with an 800# ordering system if you want to go that way.
(no up front cost)
They're a good company to work with. http://www.nstarsolutions.com I
highly recommend them.

Hello Scott:
I wanted to write because I could hear the frustration and bitterness
in your letter. Part of what I do for a living is offer consultation to
help people with their online businesses. So many times people
come to me sounding like you sound. Frustrated. Bitter. "This Internet
thing does not work", they say. Dreams die hard. Especially
when they don't have to.
I spent some time at your site. You do good work. The customers
you have are happy with it. Yet, it is not paying you enough.
Too many times, the problem is that people concentrate on the
Internet and forget that it is just another way to communicate
with people. A way to reach them at home. Without brochures
or postage or long distance calls. D you integrate offline
advertising with online?
When I started my business, I started it by advertising offline.
Locally. Telling people my url and asking them to have a look
at home when they were not rushed, like they are at the office.
It brought me customers. When I had enough to go to part time
work, I did that. Later, I left my day job for good.
(I advertised online, too.)
Have you tried listing your url in the classifieds in your local
paper? Some papers allow you to list in many small papers
with one local listing. The Internet is new enough still that
when people see a url in the newspaper they will check it out.
Print your url o
n your business cards. Leave them everywhere.
On the table with a tip in a restaurant. Include them when you pay
your bills. Send thank you notes to stores you shop in and include
your card. Everywhere you can think of. People will see your url,
and many will check it out.
If you must go back to a regular job for financial reasons, so be
it, but do not let that tarnish your thoughts about the Internet.
Your website is a 24 hour showcase for your work. There is
no such thing as "tried and true" advertising. People are what
is "tried and true". We are the ones buying. Advertising is
just the vehicle you use to reach us. Use any and all
advertising that you can to get people to your "showcase",
both offline and online, and it will come together for you.
As a fellow subscriber, if you would like more thoughts and
ideas, and a little help from a "friend" please feel welcome to email!
Sincerely,
Linda Caroll

Hello Michael & Adland Subscribers:
I have been a subscriber for a very long time, and once in a while I pop in
with a comment or two. This ezine is one of my favorites, and one of the
few that I recommend as an example of quality!
Through my own ezine, I have had many, many people write and ask
for help setting up their own ezine & newsletters. As a thank you for
appreciating my work, I created a free e-book that will help you create
a newsletter. It includes everything you will need, including a template
and full details to get a healthy subscriber base as well. In the e-book,
I also recommend subscribing to Adland's Digest as a good resource for
learning about business online & quality in ezine production.

Subject: Safe Lists
Dear Bogdan,
I was a little surprised to note that no one had answered your message
about safe lists in Adland #91. I just joined DaleSafe, the first safe
list I've ever joined, and I don't seem to have the spam problems that
you mentioned. Of course, if you do join, you are inviting people to
send you spam, but the way this list works at least it's monitored. You
don't send posts directly to everyone on the list. Instead, you send
them to the monitor (Dave Everett - the founder of the list), and he
sends them out to other members. Only the monitor has a list of the
e-mail addresses of the members, and posts do not have the poster's
e-mail address unless he/she includes it in the body of the post.
I anticipated the heavy hit of posts from the list by joining through
Hotmail, so my regular mail server is not inundated, and it's worked out
OK. There was only one spamming problem, and it didn't affect me
directly. Since the safelist is also an affiliate program that costs
around $30 to join, while it was in start-up one of the members sent out
spam trying to pump up his "sales" of the program. DaleSafe got kicked
off of its ISP, and had to get a new one, and the spammer was kicked off
the list (without a refund of his fee). However, now that the site is
up and running - Dave waited until there were 1000 members before he
"activated" the list - it seems to work fine. I grant you, though, that
my Hotmail mailbox is really crammed!

Note from Editor.
In the message where I was stating my opinion on Safe Lists I wasn't
Implying that I get spammed because I joined safe list.
I said that I never joined any safe list and still get messages from
alleged safe list I'm on.
Secondly I have a question to you Bruce.
Why do you want to be part of this DaleSafe list?
Does it have any specific area where members exchange information?
How owner of the list is distinguishing what is spam what not?

Dear Bogdan,
I have a story that I would like to share with you about spam. I sent an
Email back to a person that saw my ad and sent me a counter offer. I merely
sent him back a bounce back and he reported me to my ISP. I spent two hours
defending myself to the manager and he finally reiterated and reinstated my service.
I just want to warn people that even if you don't buy bulk email addresses or send
bulk email, you can still be falsely accused of spamming. I detest spam because it
fills my mailboxes every day but I've never turned in anyone. I always thought that by
sending them a counter offer that there was no harm done. I just want people to
know that you can get in trouble with that. I would appreciate some feedback on this
topic. I can't believe that an honest marketer could lose his way of doing business.
It can happen to anybody it seems.
Thanks

TALK YOUR WAY TO A STORM OF TRAFFIC
------------------------------------------------------------
By: David Seitz Copyright ) 1999 All Rights Reserved
Want to boost traffic at your web site almost instantly?
Sure, who doesn't! I can give you a quick tip that will
greatly boost your traffic, increase your credibility &
put you in touch with some of the top marketers online.
What am I talking about? Online discussion groups.
There are several great discussion groups online that you
can easily become a part of for free.
If you take the time to provide positive input to the
group your messages, over time will become more credible.
Your credibility will boost your messages strength which
will result in an increase in traffic. We all know that
quality traffic means cash in your pocket! Geesh I am always
making you guys money! ;o)
Now stop for a minute and get that crazy idea out of your
head, you know... the one that's screaming: "Yes, that's it!
I'll blast my advertising message in every internet
discussion group and get filthy rich in 6 hours!"
I am not talking about advertising in these discussion
groups. I am talking about becoming a regular part of this
thriving, often overlooked online community! Traffic will
naturally follow to your site in time, especially by using a
signature file (more on that latter).
Many people think that by blasting their advert to these
groups that the law of averages is on their side and no
matter how many people complain there will always be those
that flow to their site. This may be true to a point, but
trust me on this, your credibility will be totally destroyed!
Your membership to the groups will be forfeited and word
will spread quicker than fire throughout the Internet that
your a spammer. How many long term acquaintances do you think
you will make by spamming let alone sales?
If you take the time to get the feel of the group you will
be able to easily toss in your two cents every now and then.
Every time you submit a message people are going to see your
signature file and you can be assured that many of them will
be checking out your site. The more the group gets to know you
the stronger your messages become.
Using a signature on every message you post will drive traffic
to your web site 24 hours a day. Most messages are stored for
quite some time and you will receive traffic from messages
long after you have posted them. Keep your signature line
short and to the point for best results.
See the end of this article for an example of my signature
file. As you can see it has both my address and newsletter
subscription instructions. I would not go any larger than
that for your own signature file or you could risk having
your message deleted by the moderator.
To help you get started here is a list of some of the most
popular discussion groups on-line. Please read the terms
and instructions of each group before joining and make sure
you read the submission guidelines of each group before you
even think about posting a message!

Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <LAURIEDELK@wasi.com>
WHEN IN ROME
A man walked in to Joe's Barber Shop for his regular
haircut. As he snips away, Joe asks, "what's up?" The
man explains he's taking a vacation to Rome.
"ROME?!" Joe says, "Why would you want to go there?
It's a crowded dirty city! You'd be crazy to go to Rome.
So how ya getting there?"
"We're taking TWA," the man replies. "TWA?!" yells Joe.
"They're a terrible airline. Their planes are old, the food
is terrible and they're always late! So where you staying in Rome?"
The man says, "we'll be at the downtown International
Marriott." "That dump?" says Joe. "That's the worst hotel
in the city! The rooms are small, the service is surly and
slow and they're overpriced! So whatcha doing when you
get there?"
The man says "We're going to go see the Vatican and
hope to see the Pope." "Ha! That's rich!" laughs Joe. "You
and a million other people trying to see him. He'll look
the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on THIS trip. You're
going to need it!"
A month later, the man comes in for his regular haircut.
Joe says, "well, how did that trip to Rome turn out?
Betcha TWA gave you the worst flight of your life!"
"No, quite the opposite" explained the man. "Not only
were we on time in one of their brand-new planes, but it
was full and they bumped us up tofirst class."
"Hmmm," Joe says, "Well, I bet the hotel was just like I described."
"No, quite the opposite! They'd just finished a $25 million
remodeling. It's the finest hotel in Rome, now. They were
overbooked, so they apologized and gave us the
Presidential suite for no extra charge!"
"Well," Joe mumbles, "I KNOW you didn't get to see the Pope!"
"Actually, we were quite lucky. As we toured the Vatican,
a Swiss guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained
the Pope likes to personally meet some of the visitors,
and if I'd be so kind as to step into this private room and
wait, the Pope would personally greet me. Sure enough,
after 5 minutes the Pope walked through the door and
shook my hand. I knelt down as he spoke a few words to me."
Impressed, Joe asks, "Tell me, please! What'd he say?"
"Oh, not much really. Just 'Where'd you get that awful haircut?'"
