From: Harvey Turner <holton@iswt.com>
Subject: Posting to FFA pages

Hello Bogdan:

I've been following the discussion of FFA pages with interest.
Just wanted to offer my thoughts and experiences. I hope
it helps a little.

Once upon a time - they worked.  They were great and
I developed tons of traffic by visiting FFA's and
placing my link - personally and individually.

Then along came the miracle of submission services
and their went ffa pages.  I've read with great
interest the discussion of FFAs.  The thinking seems
to be now, that you should have your own page
instead of submitting to others.  Really a good
idea, but . . .  I did that and was excited about
all the emails being sent each day.  Some days I
would have 800 - 900 submissions to my FFA page.

Only one thing wrong - nobody read the emails.  I
used a submission service to place my link on
800 pages and received nearly 600 emails.  Guess
what?  I deleted them all without ready a one.  I
even deleted my own email response.  I close my FFA
page and for a long while, didn't offer links on
my site.

I just tested a new page - brand new domain name,
brand new service!  No traffic and no tracking
from previous efforts.  I used submission services
to send my new site to over 5,000 FFA and "Search
Engines".  You're right - not one single hit from
any of those submissions.

I have now added a new FFA page - it must be
visited to place a link.  No submission services
are allowed.  We're back to the olden days of FFAs.

A side note!  An unfortunate and undesirable side
effect of my 5,000 submissions were a lot of emails
complaining about my spamming their FFA pages.  It
seems, they have not given permission to the
submissions services to use their pages.  I don't
wish to hurt anyone but submission services have
not worked for me.

Thanks for letting me ad my little bit of information.

Subject: Advertising methods discussion.

Hi,

This is the first time I received this digest and I will stay with it!

I agree what Linda? said about not neglecting off-line activities to promote
an on-line business.

I have two years of experience in building a fairly large network marketing
business. Not long ago I joined SkyBiz 2000, network marketing company which
I believe will go places. Because it is internet related I started promoting
it in use-net newsgroups etc etc. over 500 hits to my webpage, not 1 person
joined. At the same time I mentioned it to a few people I KNEW, 100% sign-up
rate.

I'm new to on-line advertising and promoting and I really appreciate the
post about making valuable contributions to dicussion groups. It makes
sense. It brings in the one factor that is so important in networking -
trust. There is no trust out there. That's why spamming won't work (and if
it did work it would not attract the right kind of person anyway unless all
you are interested in is one-off sale).

Vildan

I wanted to ad my two cent's worth.
I recently had a passing thought about> joining one of those list's,
then I thought.
" If I set up another e-mail account to receive all the posting, do
I have any intention
of reading them all?"  The answer was no.
So I asked myself,  If I am not reading them, is any one reading mine?
I think the answer to that is also no.

I am new to the online marketing scene and really appreciate places like
this to help keep me realistic,
and focused on what I want to achieve..
Thank you.

In Digest #95, Dale Clark writes:

>I always thought that by sending them a counter offer that there was
>no harm done. I just want people to know that you can get in trouble
>with that. I would appreciate some feedback on this topic.

Hello Dale & Adland Subscribers:

Many people on the net do what you described. Someone sees your
ad. They harvest your address (along with zillions of others)
They send you a counter offer & you bounce an ad back at them.
I've seen marketing programs that even suggest doing this.

My thoughts? (since you asked) If you run an ad to sell widgets
and some one collects your address & sends you a "counter offer"
they are spamming you.  Why? You advertised widgets. They did
not write to ask about your widgets. Therefore you did not
"opt in" to receive the information they sent you.

By the same criteria, when you bounce an ad right back to them,
you are sending them unsolicited mail, too.  If someone steals
something from you, does it make it right for you to go and
steal from them? Two wrongs seldom make a right, but too often
this is forgotten in the anonymity of e-mail.

Funny thing is, it's almost always the people that spammed you
in the first place that complain when they get spammed back.
They justify their spam by saying "I just answered your ad".

I really like when spam includes a 1-800 number.  It allows
me to call the sender and say "Thank you for your spam email.
I have added you to the list of companies that I never want
do business with.  If you do not have ethics in the way you
advertise, I do not have much confidence in the ethics you
may or may not have in honoring your offer. Have a good day."

Like you, I work hard to build an honorable reputation.
Don't let frustration with spammers goad you into beating
them at their own game.  Instead, take pride knowing you
don't stoop to their level. That's my two cents worth! *s*

Sincerely,
Linda Caroll

Note from Editor.

Some of you probably remember issue with Heidi in relation to
this digest. I don't want to get back to that.
What I want to point to is that no matter how hard you try
to make your work clean, there be always people who  will
make your life  difficult. I still get from time to time
messages accusing me of all type of issues when people
receive Adland Digest to which they subscribed themselves.

Just yesterday I got this replay.

"do not sell list with my name on it, Wisconsin law allows
criminal penalties for unwanted Spam"

Subject:  Falsely Accused (Spam issue)

Dale Clark d.e.clark@usa.net
Wrote about the unfortunate incident when he was accused of spamming.
I work to much the same principles as Dale in that, if someone sends me an
unsolicited mailing I feel it is my right to send a reply with my offer. I
always include their original mail and a " Thanks for your offer But my
opportunity already provides............." kind of thing. I also never
report anyone for spam because I have a delete key which is a much easier
option. IMHO whoever reported Dale as a spammer, after sending their UCE to
him first, is a very low form of life and a hipocrite. I was accused of
spamming by someone on a safelist I joined until I had helped them to
correctly remove themselves from the list, the person had used the wrong
method to unsubscribe and then accused anyone sending to the list of
spamming! There are too many self appointed " net guardians " who are too
quick to accuse others of spamming.

Thanks for your time

From: Larry Parr

Greetings!  I've had HAPPY DOTS CONNECTIONS up and running since January 1st
of this year.  I think it's a very helpful site, not only to new users, but
to vetrans as well.

I have had NO money for promotion.  According to my Stats package I'm
getting approximately 275 Unique hits per day (up from about 125 4 months
ago).

As you'll see when you visit my site, I have a few banners and I also have
text links for a few Affiliate sites.  To date I have not made one sale to
ANY of the sites that I am affiliated with.

Can anyone give me any ideas of what I could do to start this site making a
little money?  I'm *convinced* this is a useful site -- but obviously
*something* is still missing.  Any ideas?

Thank you,

Please send any feedback on

BlueSheep Freestuff is a fairly new site. As you can guess, this is a
freestuff site. We think it is pretty good...
It has html help, fonts, screenmates, web mail, an award for sites,
utilities and games. We at interprise design are redesigning the site at the
moment- the last version was slow, poorly laid out and difficult to
navigate. However, the new version is already looking fantastic!
What we do need is beta testers- just ordinary surfers like you who are
kind enough to spend three minutes of their time checking out our beta site.
Many links don't work at the moment, but as we redesign pages and sections
we will stick them up for you.
        Thanks!

ARE YOU HITTING THE CLASSIFIEDS?
by David Seitz

If you're like me, you can't stand the repetitiveness
involved with posting to online classifieds. When it comes
right down to it, no matter how you look at it, there is no
real winning  solution to this problem. There are a few
software utilities you can use to help ease the burden, but
there is no total solution. However, in the time I have been
online I have experimented with most of the classified
systems out there and have found ten to be top producers for
my adverts. When you find a set that works it will save you
countless hours of messing around with the minor
classifieds.

I suggest you make it a point to visit each of these
classified sites each week to update your ads. Updating your
ads will ensure they are moved to the top of the listings
again, especially for Yahoo's classifieds. You can log in
with a member name and password for most classified sites to
update your ads. One trick many marketers use is to delete
all ads and resubmit every week. This alone can draw steady
new leads to you for as long as you employ the technique.
The key is to stick with the schedule and keep posting each
and every week.

My top producers:

The ZAP Directory
http://www.linkmedia.com/inetexch/nowhoo/nowhoo.cgi

Yahoo Classifieds
http://classifieds.yahoo.com/

1AmericaMall
http://www.1second.com/freead.htm

NetClassifieds

Five Star Classified Ads

A-Z FREE Classifieds

Classifinder

Business Solutions Classifieds
http://www.bizsol.com/

Best Mall Classified Ads
http://www.bestmall.com/class/submit.html

Classifieds 2000
http://www.classifieds2000.com/

If you post your ads to all of these sites on a regular
basis, you should have a steady stream of inquiries to your
ads. If you have America Online, I suggest trying their
classifieds also, they are not free but they are inexpensive
and effective!

To help you in your classifieds posting adventure, try these
utilities to cut down on your posting time. I use all three
and have had great results. They save me time, and we all
know time is money!

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Laurie Delk  <LAURIEDELK@wasi.com>

A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at
McDonald's.  He noticed that they had ordered one meal, and
an extra drink cup. As he watched, the older gentleman
carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out
the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half of
   them.
Then the old man poured half of the soft drink into the
extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man
then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands
   folded in her lap.
The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to
purchase another meal for them so that they didn't have to
   split theirs.

The old gentleman said, "Oh, no. We've been married 50
years, and everything has always been and will always be
   shared, 50/50."
The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat,
and she replied, "Not yet. It's his turn with the teeth.
