================= S u c c e s s    S t o r y ======================

From: Joseph Jobst <joseph@linz1.net>

Bogdan,

This is not a success story as commonly intended, it's
a story of a successful survival.

I am a 52 year old graduated architect and phyisicist, grown up
in a poor family living in a very rural region. In the need of
financing my studies I started my first business in 1970
designing small business buildings.

When I perceived that this kind of craft was definitely not the
job I would become happy with, and when I found out that my
proclivity towards marketing and selling was increasing I started
a company distributing special kinds of building materials.

In 1981, the construction market weaked, I sold 50% of my
company's shares and diversified by buying a 53%-stake in a
computer repair shop. Year after year I invested in small companies
of very different industries (software, foodstuff, roofing,
property management, advertising agency, media consulting,
global trade).

I worked 12 hours a day - 7 days a week, finally I owned
6 companies in full, and 53% to 75% in 5 other companies, I was
supervising and managing 11 companies with a total of 300+ employees...

....until 1992:

I had two cardiac infarctions, got a heart transplant, and on
top of that got taken by struma cancer.
Staying 17 consecutive months in hospitals and sanatoria I
"lost" some of my companies taken over by my then "friends"
and "partners".
Expecting the end of my life and worried about my wife's and
my son's future I sold 95% of all my companies' shares.

Life in hospital was unspeakable boring and depressing -
especially to a former work-aholic like me - till the day my
son brought me his laptop!
I started surfing the Internet immediately in the hospital,
some days later I attended an online course on html and
Perl scripting.

I felt in love with this new media, and fortunately,
I recovered far better than expected!
BUT, once the cancer seems to be under control and the doctors
promised me another 3 to 5 years more to live, an intervertebral
disk damaged and I was partially paralyzed!

But, I never lost my optimism and positive thinking all the
time, and my family looked after me solicitously. The great
support of my beloved ones together with my tremendous will to
survive induced me to start an Internet business!

I decided to offer webdesign and webhosting, bought my first
server in March 1994, installed it close to my bed and started
promotion by calling my former business fellows.

Two months later I hired my first programmer -
today I'm giving work to 7 full time, and 12 part time employees...

I've made, and I make my living on the Net!

Why?

My paralyze is a rest of hemiplegia, I can work from home
comfortably. First I started working from my bedroom, then I
converted my son's room (he was moved to his own appartment)
into an office room. In March 1997 my employees moved to our
new office half a mile away. I'm online connected to my employees,
and they are visiting me twice a day, day by day.
My employees are aged between 19 to 33 years, they are my
"childrens" and together we're a big family.

I learned "Give first - then take" in my poor-of-money but
rich-of-love childhood, and found this same motive on the
Internet in 1994. Unfortunately, the more people accessing the
Net the more of this leading idea is getting lost.

The first two sentences of our company's mission are -

"We fight SPAM! We don't like MLM,
we hate people taking others for a ride.
We fight fraud on the Internet.
We are living in trust and honestness."

"The more scamsters, swindlers, cheats, crooks, and all other
fraudulent get-rich-quick would-be business-people appearing on
the Web, the more we must be honest, reliable, serious, solid...,
to stay ahead of them."

Living this mission we've built confidence and trust; our loyal
and faithful customers' word of mouth promotion has brought -
and is still bringing in - steadily increasing number of new clients.

It's so easy to make a living on the Internet!

Note from Editor.

Thank you Joseph for your contribution.

I believe your story is a good practical guide/warning how one should
approach any business. We need to be consistent, goal oriented but
at the same time  never forget about our health  which might   at some
point refuse cooperation if not taken care of when  needed.
When we loose it,  we will find out that  there is no reason  for our rush
anymore.
I think I  know what you mean.

From: Steve Pilkington <webmaster@allmarketing.net>
Subject: Online Marketing Techniques

I've been marketing on the internet since 1997...and I've tried
almost everything to come down the "pike" as far as ways to get
traffic to my website.  I've had success with some and not so
successful with others.

There are three things I've found that produce consistent results::
1. Persistence
2. Ezine advertising.
3. Discussion Boards

There are no "secrets" but there are lots of methods for achieving
success, and there is no substitute for hard work.  If you are like I
am you get hundreds or even thousands of emails every week
promising "instant wealth and success." These kinds of emails I
simply delete, because I know better.  As an experienced internet
marketer about the only word that gets my attention now is the word
"free."  Free is still a great word to use in your advertising.

Persistence - I've found that being persistent will pay dividends...it
means doing something related to marketing every day, whether
you feel like it or not,  and adopting the "never give up attitude" if
you want something more out of life than just 9 to 5.  In other words
there are no shortcuts to success.

Ezine Advertising - As an ezine publisher I know ezine ads work.
Not only do I publish an ezine, but I advertise in ezines and
consistently get good results from them.  Ezines work because your
ad is placed before a targeted audience (an audience that is
interested in your product or service).  And ezine advertising is
cheap.

Discussion Boards - Discussion boards are where other online
marketers "hang out." These are places where people are looking
for and giving free help; you can always add your 2 cents worth.  I
have a discussion board index of my favorite boards at my website
at: http://www.allmarketing.net and people are always more than
willing to help. No advertising is allowed at all the boards I visit but
you get to leave your sig file when you post.

Discussion boards are a great place to begin and cultivate
relationships with other online marketers.

If you want results, spend your advertising dollars in ezines and
hang around discussion boards and be persistent in your marketing
efforts.

I would like to respond to what Lori Mckee had to say as follows:

(" If I set up another e-mail account to receive all the posting, do
I have any intention
of reading them all?"  The answer was no.
So I asked myself, If I am not reading them, is any one reading mine?
I think the answer to that is also no.)

I think that some people do set up separate e-mail account's for this
purpose, but there are a lot of us and me included that don't. I think it's
just a numbers game and some will and some won't and I can live with
that. I never expect 100% of what I do to work. Just have a little faith.
Some of us are doing the right thing.

---------------------------------------------

Hi Penny.

I can't really advise on paying for ads on classified ads sites.
BUT, I can point you in the direction of what I consider to be the
easiest way of placing adverts in ezines.

I would suggest that you take a look at the Ezine ADvertising Network
<mailto:ezine-m-l-m@paychecks-online.com>

In a brief synopsis, the EADN consists of around 32 ezine publishers
who have agreed to accept EADN members adverts at a rate lower than
their normal rates, OR if their rates are below the agreed advert price
for members of $8 per ezine, they will run your advert until the $8
value has been reached.

The aproximate subscriber base of the 32 ezines combined is over 500,000,
allowing for multiple subscriptions, I'd reckon on 300,000 being unique
subscribers at a conservative guesstimate.

LIFE Membership of the EADN is $50, which can be defered until commissons
cover it, as it is also on a 10x3 matrix, each active position pays $10
per month.
Meaning that a full 10x3 has the potential of paying out $1100 per month,
minus any advertising costs etc.

Overspill in this program is NOT forced, meaning that in-active members
do not get their downlines filled by the efforts of others.
I was top sponsor for A
pril, & have a complete frontline of ACTIVE
members. So as with any program I am in, i will work as hard for you as
you work yourself :)

I also have some in my downlines who aren't interested in the EADN as a
program, they just use it to minimalise the hassles of placing ezine
adverts over the course of a month.

As a publisher myself, I know that whats known as the CPM, or Cost per
1000 subscribers who potentially will see your ad is amongst the most
competitve on the web. I also know that all member ezines are always
trying to increase their own subscriber bases.

It's totally up to you how many or few ezines you want to run your advert
in, there are no minimums excepting that to be an active member you have
to advertise in 1 ezine per month.

As I' UK based I have found this program to be a godsend insomuchas I now
can utilise my pay-per-min access to find other places to advertise,
knowing that I will have adverts running all month in member ezines :)

In closing, I'd also reccomend that you take a peek at my own referral
program:http://www.paychecks-online.com/partners.htm
This is a free to join program, & ad-packages sold via your link get you
a 50% commission.
In effect if you joined & posted an advert via your own link, thats like
getting an ad in "A1 Paychecks Online" at half price.....

If you have any questions, email me direct.

Subject: Falsely Accused (Spam issue)

Hi y'all!

In Digest #96, Linda Caroll writes:

"By the same criteria, when you bounce an ad right back to them,
you are sending them unsolicited mail, too.  If someone steals
something from you, does it make it right for you to go and
steal from them? Two wrongs seldom make a right, but too often
this is forgotten in the anonymity of e-mail."

I gotta disagree with this analogy. If someone sends me unsolicited mail,
they are opening themselves up for the same. Usually I just delete them,
sometimes I scan the title. Who knows, somethin of value might be there.
It's not the same as stealing...

(I do hate the whiners who don't know how to use the delete button, shift
and control keys to mass delete.)

But if I send someone mail, I would expect them to respond in kind. Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you. If they don't like it, they
shouldn't do it. If they do it, then shut up about it if it happens to
them.

I do think they should all have an unsubscribe by replying 'remove' in the
subject line, or better yet, no subject so all the receiver has ta do is
hit reply and send..

Hi Bogdan,

because of downsizing at the company where I work, I fear that it wont be much
longer until my department will be closed. I don't have much exp. with the net,
but I have been looking into some of the offers that are out there. Can you tell
me weather the free advertising sites are anygood? We're watching our money vary

closely and I don't have money for a add company. But, at the same time I need
to prepare for what's coming up ahead. Can you provide some insight on this issue?

Note from Editor.

As an owner of Free Classified site I thought that I can
give you some feedback on that.

As with everything what is free, there is no guarantee
how this is going to work for you. In general not all
"FREE" is equal.
Some people  might think that   being listed as a top site in
major search engines is lots of traffic.

Go to  http://www.altavista.com and search for
"Free Classifieds" You will find  Adland Classifieds as first
hit ( at least it was there yesterday) Free classifieds is not
uncommon search . Guess how many hits I'm getting from
Altavista daily? About 10. Is this a lot? I don't think so.
But since it is free I don't complain of not getting enough hits.

This should give you a picture  what free means, even in respect
to  one of the top search engines.

Next question is how much did it cost me to be as a top site at
Altavista? Zero at least directly. I didn't spend a minute on
optimizing  my site nor did pay anybody for doing this.
But I work on getting as many links as possible to my site each
day.

Submitting Adland to FFA site, Classified sites, getting links
through affiliate programs. Number of links to your site is
determining rating in searches at some engines. This is recent
trend in search engine algorithms to determine rating for sites.

See this site "LinkPopularity.com," PCEdge.
Lists the number of sites that link to yours. This number affects
your ranking in some search engines, and shows a balance in
attracting site traffic from multiple sources. http://www.linkpopularity.com/

So answering your question. You might not get response directly from
listing posted to one or the other classified site but if you
post your link to many sites each day, you are going to get results
in the long run. Buy yourself submission program such as
Exploit or WolfSubmit ( there are others too), you can use web service
like this one to submit your site to 15,000 search engines for free
http://www.submit-x.com .

Continuing Free approach, you need to look for sites which offer
free stuff like one of Adland Affiliates here
http://www.sentex.net/~gmart/bg1/freestuff6b.html

The more links you create to your site the more business you are going
to get. Since you are going to use free resources you will have to
put your time to be able to compete with those who have money.

Like any other business an Internet business will require your time, investment
and dedication. You will need to learn marketing  techniques  and this will cost

you at least your time. Sum of all approaches  will give you results.

From: Teresa <TGrabs6462@aol.com>
Subject: Free Classifieds and advertising

Hi,
I've been getting the adland digest for a little while and have some
comments and questions.

COMMENTS:
I have been trying to make money on the internet for a month and have
subscribed to all kind of newsletters, ezines, and other type material and
just have to say that you are the best one.  You allow interaction without
charging for that privilage.  Keep up the good work.

QUESTIONS:
I noticed that you review websites.  Do you allow for private (mine)
to be reviewed?  I have put it together myself and am very proud of that.  It
is far from being great but I can't do all the things I would like to.  I
can't get animation to work and other problems.  I like brutal honesty but so
far have only received "for $$$ I can make you a great website".  The thing
that most people forget is that it is the pride you take in telling someone
that YOU made that yourself, not how much money you paid someone to create a
killer website for you.  If you could just look at it and give some
suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.  The URL is:
http://tgrabs.freeservers.com.

With all that is out there how can you tell what is a good classified
ad site?  I have paid for ads and have paid for my ad to be placed in 400+ ad
sites, I have placed ads and become an affiliate for adland, but so far I
have have less than 400 responses in the month I have been working.  I don't
get any response from my free ads or the one on adland.  Everyone says that
they make money, so far I have made 63.00 my first month.  3% of the people
who visit my site join or purchase something, is that good? and business is
just slow?  I haven't been able to get a straight answer from anyone.  I am
not paying for more free ad submissions though.
Any advise would be great.  As far as a person having to work for it--I have
been putting in 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week on this.

One last question....Honesty or dishonesty?  I have always been a
very (sometimes brutally ) honest person and therefore I tell people the
truth about my opportunities.  I see ads that say you can make 5,000 your
first month, and others like that --I don't!  When people ask me how much
they are guaranteed to make their first week I tell them zero (I can't
guarantee anything).  I am beginning to think that honest people shouldn't be
involved in internet marketing.  I have good products to sell and great
opportunities but I can't lie to the prospective client.  Does anyone have
any suggestions??

I appreciate you looking at this,
Teresa
TGrabs6462@aol.com

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from Editor.
I think I addressed partially your questions in my response to previous
message but I want to add here that  having 400 responses in  a month
when you are starting business is a lot and the fact that people are
joining your list is going to pay off later if you mange to be in contact
with these  people all the time. In one of the previous digest issues
I mentioned that during my first year of business I haven't made any
money but now I'm making more than anybody I know from my surrounding
because I have built my business for over a year. Now I'm getting paid
for my knowledge and marketing skills. Also   client base built for over
a year of working for free is keeping my income steady.
I also don't believe that there is a way to make $ 5,000  in first month, but
many people like this idea and are trying and I'm sure that some are
getting close.
I invite everybody to this discussion. It seems to be getting very interesting.
Subject:  A Question Of Concern
I've been on the Internet for 2 years. I've grown up fast on the
Internet and have come to learn a lot about all the false ads to get
your money, the decent home business opportunities and of course, the
money grabbers. But my question involves the promotional tools for
submitting your business over the internet to FFA Link pages.
I mean, common sence dictates, that FFA sites can only hold so many
links, and if everybody is submitting links to basically the same links
sites across the internet, how do you get listed? How do you recieve a
return automated message that your link has been added and is at or
near the top of the category that you selected, along with a long list
of advertisements of business opportunities the webmasters are pushing?
Why is it I check to see where my ad is, only to find it's nowhere to
be seen?
Am I missing something?
Sincerely
Frank Brown
