Subject: Falsely Accused (Spam issue)

In Digest #98, Linda Carolln wrote....well, a lotta things...hehe

First off Linda, it was not a personal attack on ya, I just didn't agree
with the analogy as it was stated for the original post. Which I believe
was someone gettin in trouble for spammin after he was sent a spam letter
and all he did was reply to it..

"Pred, I think you must have misunderstood the analogy.
I didn't say that spamming is stealing.  I said that two wrongs
don't make a right. Stealing because you were stolen from doesn't
make stealing 'ok'.  Spamming because you were spammed doesn't
make spamming 'ok', either. If spamming is 'okay', why are ISP's
shutting people down for it?  Why are there laws agains it?"

Again I was referrin ta someone who sends you an ad and has the nerve to
say you spammed them when you reply back with an ad.

Two wrongs don't make a right, maybe not. But why is it wrong to send an ad
back to someone that sent you an ad? How bout, do unto others as you'd have
them do unto you?

I didn't say mass spammin was okay and as for the law, not everyone lives
in the same country and a lotta people seem to forget that. What laws
applies ta one country does not necessarily apply ta others. Just 'cos it's
a law doesn't make it right either. It was once legal for a white man to
own a black one. It was once illegal for a woman to vote....but that's off
topic..

"I have taken an ethical stance against spam and I stand by it.
Dale asked for 'feedback'. I just gave my opinion. Does that make
me a 'whiner'?  Personally, I think people make a subconscious
parallel assumption regarding name-calling and professionalism.
Then again, that's just my opinion, right? ;)"

Again I wasn't referrin to ya, you have a right to yer opinion. It's not
against the law....is it? But in some places havin an opinion could getcha
locked up....hehe

What is the subconscious parallel assumption people make regardin
name-callin anyway?

"I know how to use my delete key. I also know how use filters.
I do both. Your comment about "remove" addresses is very
innocent for someone doing business online. Many professional
spammers use remove addresses to build new lists of addresses
that they know will reach a flesh and blood person and aren't
a 'dead' address. Those lists are worth a LOT of money to
professional spammers. Filters work much better & they're safer."

Yes if only the world would abide by the laws we'd all be better
off...sigh. I getta lot of mail sayin somethin like 'this is in accordance
with the new US blah, blah law' , are these guys ignorin the law? Does that
law apply to me in Canada? If the ISP could filter out spam mail at the
users request then that would be perfect.

"Incidentally, I went to your website to see if I could
find a 'name' other than "pred". I noticed that none of
your testimonials have signatures, email addresses or
urls listed and the only 'contact' names I could find were
Mikey & Shaggy.  Would you be Mikey or Shaggy?  It's
nice to know who one is talking to, you know?"

No I'm Pred. I'm the webmaster. Yes there is a Mikey (real name) and Shaggy
(online name). Currently they're movin from Florida to Tennessee, so I'll
hafta change their email addresses. They have a phone so you can talk to
them, an office where ya can visit and they answer their emails...as I do.
Predator is my online handle, just like a writer sometimes uses a nom de
plume.

The testimonials have no signatures, but they keep them on file at the
office. A name can be put to each one, so they could prove it if it was
required. It says on the webpage that all the testimonials are on file as
well.

You can check out this forum too, http://www.commoditycafe.com/ . You'll
see a lotta posts about Mikey, from Mikey and trading in general.

Is your real name Linda? No offense but you could be Frank for all I know.
If my name is important to you or anyone I have no objection ta tellin. But
the handles are more fun dontcha think? Truckers use 'em all the time on
their cb's, and they seem ta know who they're talkin to.

The names have not been a problem for us, people seem ta like it.
Personally, I think it adds character to the site and it certainly doesn't
seem to hamper sales. If the product is good and the folks are gettin value
for their money and good service, that's all that matters to 'em, right?

Didja read Market Predator??! Am I photogenic or what?!!

Subject: Falsely Accused (Spam issue)

Hello Bogdan:

I've followed this discussion with interest as I do most issues
discussed in your fine publication.  I do not believe in using
spam and have not done so since one very unfortunate effort
when I first became active on the internet.  I learned a lesson
the hard way.  I try not to send any correspondence that could
even be mistaken for spam.

It brings up a question.  I offer free classified ads and free links
on my site - to develop traffic and prospects.  (My free links
page is not used by submission services. - you must post to
it individually.)  Each person placing a free classified ad and/or
a free link on my page receives an email with some of my
offers.  For this, on occasion, I have been accused of spam.

Fortunately, I keep every ad placed and can prove the contact
was initiated by them and not spam.  We do not use the addresses
to develop an email program.  They receive the one email and
nothing more - unless them place additional ads and links.

This has been an acceptable practice and I've used it for years.
It only seems that recently, some advertisers taking advantage of my
free offers have decide my response was spam.

I receive my share of spam.  I do not use the "bounce back" method
discussed earlier (I have considered it and decided no.)  I filter and
delete.

A new trend (to me) that seems to be developing is to request free
information from my autoresponders and send me their "spam" as
part of the request.  Again - the delete button works well.  Has anyone
else noticed this new tactic?

Thanks for listening - just wanted to comment.  With the "today feeling
about spam) one must be overly careful not to even "appear" to be
using spam.

Thanks

Harvey Turner

really funny to have someone send software to harvest my email

of the same typo-ridden sales letter, and then complain that I
spammed them when I send back a request for more info with

Penny,
you might spend your money on classifieds in case of not knowing
how to use your super-abundance of wealth  ;-)
Otherwise, forget paid online classifieds (the exception proves the rule!)

Robert Woodhead has made an impressive study on this subject,
read "The 500 Sites Fallacy" at <http://selfpromotion.com>.

Here are the Top10 of online advertising in order of chances of success:

1. Press Releases <http://linz1.net/prservice.html>
2. Ezine ads <http://linz1.net/GIMad.html>
3. Search engines & directories
4. Your own ezine/newsletter
5. Reciprocal/referring links
6. Posting articles
7. Sig.File
8. Participation on BBS, discussion lists, newsgroups
9. Personal recommendations/word of mouth
10.Banners

From: Joseph Jobst <joseph@linz1.net>
Subject: Online Marketing Techniques and FFA links

Hi Bogdan,

This is in response to the ongoing discussion about
online advertising, FFA pages, and submission services.

First and foremost, advertising is one of this "necessary evil"
any off-line and online business must live with.

Second, FFA pages have been a helpful resource in the very
early days of Internet. Meanwhile we can talk about FFA pages
like "once upon a time..."
Don't waste your time on submitting to FFA's, instead of it's
highly recommended to read Robert Woodhead's studies
"The 500 Sites Fallacy" at < http://selfpromotion.com >.

Third, for me, automated submission services present a red flag -
I can all but guarantee the a majority of these so called
"1500 search engines and directories" are free for all link pages.
Also, GVU, MediaMetrix, and NetRatings consistently show the most
popular search engines responsible for the majority of searching
traffic derive from the "Big Ten", so why bother and waste money?

This lists the top10 used search engines.

Search Engine....4/1/99....Change vs. 3/1/99
1. Yahoo.........48.75%......+13.8%
2. Excite........19.26.......- 4.8%
3. AltaVista.....11.15.......- 9.3%
4. Infoseek.......6.58%......-11.3%
5. WebCrawler.....3.21%......-45.7%
6. HotBot.........2.25%......-21.8%
7. Snap...........2.15%......+93.7% (!)
8. MSN............1.60%......-11.6%
9. Lycos..........1.59%......- 4.8%
10.GoTo...........0.96%......-14.3%
(This statistic is published once a month in my weekly free
newsletter *GIM - Global Internet Marketing News*)

Hand submission of optimized URLs ensures proper indexing.
While NO one can insure top positioning, there are many good
services out there that can help market your site through the
search engines.

Save your money and drive targeted traffic to your site,
visit < http://searchenginewatch.com > and
hire a professional who devotes his/her life to the understanding
and proper use of the search engines.

If you're marketing on the internet, you may also
consider each of the following ...

- Give away free information. The number one reason people
are on the Net is access to information! Even if your goal is to
sell something, focus on offering some valuable information to
your prospective customers.

- No matter what you're marketing, you probably know plenty
about it. Share your knowledge. Create a FREE report and
give it to anyone who'll be interested in.

- Submit articles and press releases to online and
traditional newsletters and magazines at least once a month.
FREE exposure just can't be beat!
More info < http://linz1.net/prservice.html >

- Visit NewsGroups as often as you submit press releases.
Post some helpful information and you may learn a thing or two
in the process.

- Keep the amount of graphics on your web pages to a minimum.
Web surfers seem to be a very impatient lot. Text loads much
faster than gifs and jpegs. Most won't wait more than 15 seconds
before clicking that stop button and moving on!

- Write down ALL of your new ideas! Are you constantly
brainstorming? Don't let a single idea slip away. Keep a
running list. Review and act on the best ideas without delay!

- Take a few hours every week to just surf the web. Focus
on learning something new each time. Knowledge is the #1 key
to success!

- Create your very own marketing plan, a how to guide can be
found at < http://linz1.net/biz/mktpl.html >

These are just a few of the many, many ways...
And remember, not only will you be helping your fellow netizens
learn, you'll be running an effective marketing campaign!

Thanks for your attention.

Subject: On the Honesty in Advertising issue

Hi Bogdan and all,

I'm pretty much out of all mlm/affiliate programs because they've
gotten so... well, fill in the blanks.

But one of my last shots on it in FFA return emails, I put as the
subject, "It takes work and it's expensive -- any more questions?"

Would you believe I got a better response from that than I did the
others?

It's hard to get past that something for nothing philosphy that the
modern world has ingrained. But I think if you have a strong *benefit*
subject and follow it with an immediate *benefit* list, you'll pick up
the ones that aren't in it just for the ride.

Besides, wouldn't you rather have 4 workers than 24 people that you
have to babysit and then they do absolutely nothing after you've
worked so hard with them?

From: Bryan Marsden <bryan97@pc.jaring.my>
Subject: Traffic Building What does and What doesn't

Hi All,

I have been out there with my site for about two and half months and like
everybody else have been going through the learning curve on the essence of
internet business, traffic building.

What works and what doesn't, I have tried the freebies, the FFA's, Classifieds,
Ezines, Newsgroups, Banners, click-thru networks etc. After all of this the
conclusion is that worthwhile advertising and marketing has to be paid for.

FFA's - What a waste of time, as pointed out in this digest postings to FFA's
last at the most for about two hours, does anybody know of anybody that actullay
visits an FFA site anyway.  Owning an FFA with its autoresponder doesn't have
that much benefit either, OK you get a lot of emails out from autosubmissions
but to what avail, how many of you do as I do after a submission, Hit the Block
Delete.

What value has FFA submission software, how many of you actual read the logs
after submitting, I have and you will find that many of the advertised databases
on submission software either do not accept autosubmission or the software does
not even have permission to acces the database. My advice don't waste money on
buying submission software use it for effective advertising elswhere.

Ezines and Newsgroup have got merit in that we all learn through the knowledge
and experiences of one another and does generate some traffic, but the traffic
is there for a review of your site not for the purpose of buying products.
Having said that it is still worthwhile traffic as the feedback is quite often
invaluable on how to improve your site and make the desired sales.

Click-thru - Hits2U networks, OK if you go on the surfing rounds and build up
credits your site meter goes up, but to what value, many of the visitors just
come to the site click the icon and go, quite often they would not even be able
to recant what was on the page ten seconds after they left, because they didn't
look at anything but the icon they had to click on to get to the next site.

Banner Exchange another waste, banner exchange only builds traffic for your site
after you have been out and brought in your traffic from somewhere else, only
then do you start to get your banner promoted.

Search Engines, one of the keys to successful promotion, this is one area where
I would promote software that explains and guides you through the key factors in
successful search engine submission - Web Position Gold in my opinion is good,
they allow you a thirty day free trial of the software, which, if you are
prepared to spend some time during that period is a very good tutorial on
submitting to the various engines.

After trying out all of the above including getting my site on the first pages
of most major engines only to see it disappear on sites like Goto because of
paid advertising, I decided I should invest in some paid advertising myself.
What a difference, my traffic is increasing by the day, 100 visitors per day is
still not a lot but it has doubled in the last 10 days since I started paying to
advertise and is still going up.

Just before I started to write this I checked my visitor stats, 53% were from
bookmarks ( the site must have some appeal), 24% from paid ads, 18% from search
engines the other 5% are from various sources, including click-thru, some from
Free Classifieds.   Banner Exchange Hits & FFA's - Nil.

As they say "Nothing good comes Free and Free doesn't always come good".

My evaluation in the short time I have been working the internet is that like
offline business, nobody is going to give it to you free, you have to work at it
and invest $$$ in it.

I hope that the above opinion has provided some insight to somebody, I would
also appreciate some opinions on my site.

Good luck and good business.

Bryan Marsden

Oh yeah, Jon D. Alwood

Also, if anyone else has had good experiences with cookie cutter, I'd love

What am I going to be getting if I sign up for your mailing list?
Where you have message board-how about just the link-maybe
change the wording to "Stop by and visit our message board!"
And make these words link to it. And not so much space between
your list bot and your site info. That's my 2 cents!

http://www.myfreeoffice.com/traveladvantage/
This site looks good-I have bookmarked it for later reference.
Like others-people may find you, but you might want to
"remind them to bookmark your page" for when they get ready to travel.

Personally-my opinion/preference-I don't care for black
backgrounds-just my opinion. BUT, give SOME info on what your deal is,
if I just found your site, I would not have clicked on it any further to find
out more...Just think about your wording. It sounded premade.
Maybe give some examples of some of the services on the main page.
I am in a few affiliate programs already-it didn't "entice" me enough to

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady. He
stepped out for a smoke, only to realize he'd lost his cigarettes.
In the middle of the room, under the carpet, was a bump. "No
sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack of smokes," he
said to himself. He proceeded to get out his hammer and
  flattened the hump.

As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. "Here," she said,
handing him his pack of cigarettes. "I found them in the
hallway." "Now," she said, "if only I could find my gerbil."
