A good technique for business networking is to have a strategy. It's important to have a clear purpose of what it is you're looking for from the networking relationship and what you're offering.

7 Strategic business networking tips:

1. Define your objective.
It is a good idea to have clear and defined objective/s for business networking. What are you looking for? Is it more sales or more clients or business partners you're looking for?

2. Define what you can do for your network partners in exchange for information and contacts.
As well as having a clear idea of what you want from the relationship, it is also as important to have a clear idea of what you can offer others and what you're willing to exchange in assistance to others.

3. Identify your target.
List down what kind of people you are targeting on making connections with that would help you succeed in your business networking objectives.

4. Work out an introduction statement of what you're about and what you can offer.
This should be about 10 seconds short statement of what you're business is about and what your business offers as a solution to which problem. This is very important to your strategic business networking technique as your introduction has to make an impact within that 10 seconds. Be creative with this.

5. Listen more than talk and identify the right people.
By active listening to people in networking functions, helps get to know people well and identify who the right people you need to know.

6. Listen for an opportunity to offer help.
Make a note to offer assistance to people who need your expertise or help by listening to conversations. By doing so, even though they may not help you directly, it does pay off as they will try and bring you their contacts and be willing to exchange the favour you have given.

7. Look for common ground.
Try to find a common ground from your business network contacts as knowing them on a personal level creates a higher level of trust and it builds genuine friendship. Part of an effective strategic business networking is not just about forming a relationship but also about maintaining it and a great way to maintain that relationship is to form a friendship.
