What About Networking in the Real World?

Over the past 30 some years, I had become quite skilled at networking in the real world, and over the last 15 online as well. Of course, even with all the latest industry and business social networking sites online, there is just something about pressing the flesh and meeting people face to face that makes all the difference. Whereas many new entrepreneurs work the internet, and social networks, I still prefer to do it in the real world, and occasionally stay in contact perhaps using the modern communication tools now available for efficiency's sake.

At one time our Franchisees in total belonged to over 300 chambers of commerce around the US, and often participated getting new business, quality referrals, and became one with the communities they served, which in turn served them quite well with an abundance of constant new business. Meaning they attended functions, breakfasts, fundraisers, mixers, grand openings, and various committee meetings and so forth.

Despite what you might think business "networking" in the real world is not dead; not even close. There are still Chamber of Commerce meetings, service clubs, leads groups, and now "Meet-Ups" which are organized online, but happen in real-life, perhaps a nice combination of the virtual and real world. So, a word of advice might be not to negate real world networking, or think somehow you don't need to do it, because everything is online these days - there is a lot more to business and people than allowing virtual friends that you've never even met to adorn your Facebook page.

Indeed, I suppose the purpose in writing this article it to give a little knowledge, inspiration, and philosophy to go out there in the real world and network, it pays dividends and will keep your local small business doing fine. If you are new to real world networking, or how to get the most out of a chamber mixer, community service club social event, or networking breakfast, then perhaps you ought to study up on the topic before you spend countless hours online to no avail.

You see, as a small business consultant, I've watched and listened to many entrepreneurs who've told me how great Facebook, Twitter, or an industry specific social business network was, and then 6 months later when the newness has worn off, I ask them; "so how is it going?" and then they level with me and tell me it was a waste of time and brought in very little business.

Gee whiz, I could have told them that, when half of their "friends" on the site are from other states and most of their business model is selling to locals in the community. Please consider all this and think on it.
