By Lance Winslow   Many do-it-yourself Internet Entrepreneurs build their own websites from a series of template choices and then launch their website. They will use a popular website building tool such as Expression Web and add a few pages now and again. But if you ask them how much they spend on their website, they will tell you very little, as most is a labor of love or a tedious chore, but it's all done by them. Not long ago, an individual asked me to take a look at their website and tell me what I thought about it. I asked them How much have you invested into your website? They said $8,000 but they were going to have $10,000 or more invested by the time they were completed. When I visited their website, I thought, well, it looks like a pretty average site as far as the number of pages are concerned.   The layout, navigation and information seems to be above average, but it does not look all that expensive to me. And it was my recommendation that they add some pages, such as information in articles and the like to bulk it up and make it a destination point for those who wish to learn about that industry niche. I also suggested that they needed an online newsletter email and some other stuff, but overall the website seems to be fine.   The owner of the website had not had it up all that long and was expecting to be making more money by now, but that is not the reality of websites, first you need traffic and synergy and you must sell something that people want and are willing to pay for. They were depressed and said that if they did not start making money that the whole thing was dead. Of course, no website is ever dead until you quit, websites should be dynamic in nature.   The lesson here is simple; it takes money to make money, but that is not all it takes. You need to have a product or service you can sell at a profit. Your website will cost upfront capital, some more than others; full-on pay sites with lots of behind the scenes abilities can get expensive, but to service the customers you are going to have to consider this. Your website costs will be capital costs, but it does not just stop once you build it.   And just because you build it, does not mean it will make any money. You must pay attention to the accounting of your website and you must realize that this is a business and you are going to have to run it like one.
