The Lowdown on Link & Web Directories

By David G. James

What are web directories?

A web directory is a service based website that lists other websites in categories. Think of the phone book (Yellow Pages for example), its the same principle except online! Web directories will usually list the site, a description, a hyperlink to the page, and sometime even an thumbnail image of the homepage. Web directories are not search engines, they do not associated web pages by keywords, only by category.

Most web directories get their listings from site owners, who are eager to get their sites listed to increase their visibility online. You will usually notice a prominent link to 'Submit a Link' or 'Add Url' or similar, which will take you to a form to fill out your site details. The directory owner will then review the submission and add or remove the site depending on suitability.

Why should I get my site listed in a web directory?

Well, there are a few good reasons for getting your site listed in a directory:

Reach. In the old days it used to be said "Build it and they will come". To some extent that's true, but on the most part you need to reach out and get the people to come to you. A web directory listing will contribute to your site reach by putting your site in front of people.

Exposure. Established web directories have lots of traffic on a day to day basis. Getting you site listed into your category of choice will mean that should receive targeted traffic to your site.

SERP rank, or search engine result page rank. Having links to your website, from other websites, means that your ranking goes up in search engines. This contributes to your page being higher up in the results page (page 1 as opposed to page 10 for example).

Things to take into consideration

There are more benefits to getting your website listed in directories than not, however, some advice from a veteran directory submitter:

The free web directories are great, set up a reciprocal link and your away. If you just want your site listed, and you are not bothered about enhancing your SERP rank then fire away to all of the free directories.

If, however, like me you are interested in getting a higher page rank I usually go for the Paid Submission, or Bid for Position links, and I'll tell you the reason why; Its a One Way Link to your site, and usually from a directory with a high page rank which is gold dust in SEO terms. What this means is that Google, or yahoo or any other search engine which values the links to your page, will give you a better ranking for the link.

Happy Submitting!

Affiliate Marketing Tips - Sizing Up the Competition

By Steven Wagenheim

Let's be honest, the nature of affiliate marketing means that you're going up against other people. You're selling a product that isn't your own and there are plenty of folks out there who are doing the exact same thing. In some cases, many folks. This is where it is critical to size up the competition and see where it is you stand. You might find that your efforts are better spent elsewhere. Don't worry, I'll explain. By the time you're done reading this, you'll have a very good handle on the process.

If you're like most affiliates, you probably get your promotional ideas from the Clickbank marketplace. That's fine. They have some great products there, many of which are proven sellers. But that's also where we can get into a lot of trouble.

See, the biggest mistake that most affiliate marketers make is going to the marketplace and picking out the hottest product that's there. Since the products are listed in order of popularity, the first one on the list is usually the one most affiliates will choose. However, if you take a close look at one of the product stats, you'll see that this may not be the best choice.

The stat I'm talking about is gravity. This is a weighted average of the number of affiliates promoting the product who are making money doing so. I won't get into how the stat is computed because it gets a little hairy. Suffice it to say, the higher this number is, the more affiliates you're going up against. The top products usually have gravities of 300 or more. That's a lot of affiliates.

Now, you're probably thinking that this is good, that it means the product is selling well. It is good, in that respect. However, going up against that many affiliates is going to make it harder for you to get your share of the sales, especially if you're not an expert affiliate marketer with all the top secrets. Going up against 300 or more affiliates is suicide.

Okay, so what's the answer? For me, it's simple. I've discovered that products with gravities of around 50 also sell very well and you're not going up against so many people. As a result, the product sells better for you than a product of a gravity of 300 or more. Sounds simple, and it is.

Sizing up the competition is critical to being a successful affiliate marketer.
