Barry Scott -Digest Editor

I used an old marketing strategy from my days in school to see if I could apply it to today's online world. I would like to share the results I came up with.

I knew that to develop the product or service I had, I had to test it, learn it and work it. This was product knowledge that would be needed for start up, would be needed for future development, and it was the important first step. This is needed regardless of where or how you are selling!

I needed a storefront or office, so I converted this to a website! The challenges between a physical or cyber location are different in some ways but very familiar in others. A physical location can equal your site name. Appearance is appearance whether it is the interior of a store or a website, it must be appealing. The semantics of navigating through a physical store aisle and cyber menu location can both be just as challenging to ensure your customers are seeing everything you want them to see. Having completed two of three I continued with the final of advertising.

Finally, I was ready to look at marketing and locating the best place to advertise. This would have been a really tough question if I did not have the knowledge of the above steps, because with it I knew what and why to advertise. In today’s world it is easier to get the advertising set up at a lower cost, however you have to factor in your own time. Finding the where, this was to advertise where I had an opportunity to reach an actual target audience, I wanted to make sure it was not too general.

How I would proceed was to not place ads into a non-target area that was really costing me more time by doing it and creating even more work to track it properly. I knew who would be interested, by category, country and industry because I had product knowledge and that was my target! If I marketed in general, the cost was; more time spent trying to educate my buyer for something they really didn’t need and then answer questions until they were convinced of what I already knew and that they did not need my services. I was using time for people who would never use what I had. If I advertised where I knew people would require my services or at least have some interest, my target audience was more likely to buy.

Hope this helps! As always any questions or comments can be sent to me by clicking on my name below or send it to barry@softfornet.com

Sincerely,

Barry Scott Editor

2009 is a Great Year to Start a Business

By David Gass

Some of you may think I'm crazy for the headline but it's true. In the midst of a down turn, stock market plummeting, housing prices falling, high unemployment, poor consumer confidence, and all the other things going wrong there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That's right - new business start-ups.

If you don't believe me, just look at history. A recent article by Rhonda Abrams in the USA Today noted that 16 of the 30 companies that make up the Dow industrial average were started during a recession or depression. These include: Procter & Gamble, Disney, Alcoa, McDonald's, General Electric and Johnson & Johnson.<

In the years 1973-1975 the United States had an unpopular president, was in the midst of the Watergate scandal and was at the tail end of an extremely costly war that had divided the country. Gas prices increased 50% in just two years and consumer confidence dropped to an all time low.

You would think based on the state of America between 1973 and 1975 you wouldn't want to start a business or at least if you did it would be a horrible time to do so and no company would make it. We'll here are a few that did start in the early 70's and not only survived.... Well you'll get the picture.

Supercuts, Chili's, Cablevision, Industrial Light & Magic, Famous Amos Cookies, Oakley and of course there was Microsoft.

Starting a business in so-called "bad-times" can be a great time. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Many businesses are closing leaving a gap for the consumer to fulfill on their needs. If there are four Ice Cream stores in the area and consumers slow down their spending, you'll likely see all four stores hurting for customers. The Ice Cream store with the best financial balance sheet will likely survive through the "hard-times". If there aren't any with good balance sheets, they may all go under. This doesn't mean there isn't a need for an Ice Cream Shop, there just isn't enough of a demand for four. This would be a great time to look at where the gaps are in your area.

2. Consumers typically slow down on new purchases, which means when an item breaks they are more likely going to fix it then spend the extra money to buy a new one. If you are a handy at repairing items, you may want to set-up a repair shop. It was just reported last week that sales at repair shops have increased every month the last year when all other stores were declining in sales.

3. Become the affordable alternative. Many consumers are loyal to a specific restaurant, store or type of business. However, when times are tough and the consumer starts to cut back they are more likely to jump ship and find a less expensive alternative to meet their needs. If they are use to spending $25 for dry cleaning and can get the same quality for $20 they just may change their dry cleaner.

4. It's a great time to pick up really good talent. If you are starting a business where you need to hire staff, now is a great time. There are a lot of layoffs at corporations and small businesses closing during tough times. This is a great opportunity for those hiring to pick up top talent at lower wages. You can now afford to hire the College graduate whereas before you had to settle for someone who just completed their G.E.D.

If I haven't convinced you yet that now is the time to start your own business, then you may just be one of those people who I run into daily that says - "I have always wanted to start my own business - but have always been afraid it's not the right time." They've been making that statement for years and will continue to live with regret they didn't make the move and decide it is the right time "now".

How to Choose the Right Domain Name For Your Internet Home Business

By John McRae

If you are researching the many benefits of having a Internet home business to start earning extra retirement income hopefully you understand the value of owning your domain name versus using a free domain name service.

Choosing the correct domain name is the first and a vital part of succeeding with a Internet home business. It can also be a confusing and daunting task if you are unsure of how to proceed. There are a few basic approaches you can use to help determine the best domain name for your particular situation.

Using keywords in your domain name is a popular and easy way to get quickly recognized by the search engines and traffic to your site. Once you determine what the focus of your Internet home business will be choose one or two keywords that customers search to find your product.

One easy method to search for keyword ideas is by using Google Adwords. This allows you to enter a keyword and then get results of how many searches per month for that phrase along with different variations of the phrase.

Chances are that the particular keyword you choose will have a very high amount of searches each month but more than likely someone is already using it for a domain name. With this tool you will get many variations and eventually you should be able to find one that works for you.

Using your name or your company name as your domain name. Many people will choose to brand there name and drive traffic to their site that way.

Think of eBay, or Amazon or even Google. There are no keywords in those domain names and nothing to tell you what service they provide. However virtually everyone knows those company names and what service they provide. By constantly branding their name people automatically go to these sites without even searching other sites.

Of course the chances of ever achieving this type of brand recognition is not very feasible however with the proper amount of marketing simply using your name as the web site address can bring substantial traffic.

This method usually takes longer to start bringing traffic but over time the quality of traffic can be better.

Instead of searching by a particular keyword customers begin to search for your name. This usually mean that you have begun to make a presence on the web and people trust your opinion. If they trust your opinion chances are they will purchase from you .

Regardless of what method you choose remember that simply having have good domain name will not guarantee success with a Internet home business. There is still much work that needs to be done but your domain name is key to start earning extra retirement income.

Some detail into Adlandpro's products and services for the new or experienced user.

Common Technical Questions

I have advertised my ad for a week and I am getting a few hits but I really need more?

When you are advertising you want to set it up like a corporate campaign.

Setting up a campaign can be defined as offering a variety of looks to the viewer with or with out them knowing this. Remember this; two viewers can be looking for the same product and come across the same ad for this product, one may react to it and one may not, this is the exact reason there has to be variety.

Creating three different ads for one website, each with their own unique heading and ad body but going to the same URL starts to cover a wider audience.

Keep in mind, when you are advertising you want to reach the target audience, so put together your ads with that in mind. If you are selling electronics do you really think you will get a sale by posting an ad in the Gardening category? Keep your campaign in a related area where you will attract attention.
