Dentistry is one of the oldest professions globally and is a significant part of everyday life. Dentistry, sometimes called oral medicine and dental science, consists of the study, identification, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of disorders, diseases, and teeth and gum conditions. A dentist provides care for all aspects of oral health, including preventing tooth decay and maintaining the oral cavity and gums. They are also responsible for ensuring the patient's satisfaction with the treatment and ensuring that treatment is provided in a sanitary, acceptable, and consistent manner.

Dental assistants perform duties in a dentist's office, assisting dentists in the office and helping them with patients. They work under the direction and supervision of a dentist, and their duties include preparing patients for dental treatments, sterilizing and assembling dental instruments, and taking and developing x-rays. Assistants can obtain a license after completing an associate degree program through a participating college or university and then must sit an examination given by the board of dentistry to confirm that the student is qualified to practice dentistry. Students can choose to continue their studies by getting a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a doctoral degree. The programs offered by most dental colleges and universities include courses in primary dentistry, medical terminology, radiology, pathology, oral surgery, dental physiology, and dental procedures.

Rising costs of health care make the need for a dentist's services more severe than ever. People want to stay fit and healthy, but they don't want to pay a lot of money. By taking advantage of discounted dental plans, people can ensure that they get the preventative care they need without worrying about rising costs. The American Dental Association is committed to providing affordable dental care for all, but the state, "No one should go without a toothbrush, even someone who takes care of their teeth at home."
