Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or periodontitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums and other structures that support the teeth, including the periodontal ligament and the jawbone. It is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth, which forms plaque on the teeth and along the gumline. Over time, if not properly removed through regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and professional dental cleanings, the plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.
Periodontal disease typically starts with gingivitis, which is the inflammation of the gums. Symptoms of gingivitis may include redness, swelling, bleeding, and tenderness of the gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation extends beyond the gums and affects the underlying structures that support the teeth. Periodontitis can result in the loss of bone and connective tissue.
