The Buddha’s teaching is neither eternalism nor annihilationism. On the way to Nibbana one also enjoys rapture and pleasures and therefore one knows that is a correct path. Meditation is a long term project. During meditation we allow everything even trivialities to arise in consciousness and let them go.
Nothing can stay permanent to excite us. After it reaches its peak, it loses its fire, and will become boring and dreary. That person will become depressed and disillusioned and end up terribly demanding. He will want to have more miraculous and extraordinary things. They also have the illusion that the body is the self. People regard all their thoughts, memories, feelings, perceptions, concepts and consciousness of the body as a self. All the above are not self. They are not a person. They are conditions in nature. Anger comes and goes. It is only a changing condition. It is not you. Dullness, stupidity, restlessness, and doubts are things we push aside. Love and hatred are changing conditions. All those objects around us can excite, repel, or attract us. Mindfulness is the ability to be awake and aware of wherever you are.
When the mind is stilled or one-pointed, truth will dawn, just like what took place under the Bodhi tree that full moon day.
Those who have attained a degree of calmness or bliss resulting from meditation will continue to do the practice. They are beginning to wriggle free from the bondage of defilement.
The stream winners have experienced a foretaste of the deathlessness.
Clearing the past is not a matter of moves along these tracks removing every specific act of bad kamma we had committed. It is a matter of straightening, uprooting, or leaving that track by spreading loving kindness (metta), compassion [karuna], appreciative joy [mudita] and equanimity [upekkha] to those being we had offended in the past. We can cultivate good kamma by body, heart, {mind], and thought or speech. Generating good kamma daily and establishing purity of intention was Buddha’s way of liberation. Rapture and tranquility come to you when the mind is settled in its meditation theme. You may use basic kindness to interact with the messy and tangled real-life situations.
If you see something or someone, be mindful on seeing, and say: seeing, seeing, seeing, until that image disappears. Then go back to your breath, and continue your meditation. An on going purpose of meditation is the liberation from bad kamma. Therefore meditation discharges tension. Old kamma are stored up as citta-sankhara. Sankhara are the carriers of kamma.
Vipassana is more a matter of looking into the body and mind that has become calm, and taking in how things really are. The practitioner experiences a steady awareness over the body while sitting, walking, standing or reclining. He may experience rapture with deeply relaxed, tender, fulfilled and refreshed feeling. The mind becomes clearer, steadier, more warm-hearted. Positive state of mind exerts a beneficial effect on our biology.
Deeply contented people have better immune function too!
