Gentian violet is a synthetic dye mainly used in medicinal purposes. Gentian violet also known as crystal violet or methyl violet 10B.
It belongs to triphenylmethane group of dyes. It was originally used as a textile dye than it was found to have medicinal properties.It is used to treat infections and wounds.

Medicial application –
Antifungal – It is Primarily used to treat fungal infection like Candida.It is also used for conditions like ringworm.
Antibacterial – Gential violet acts as antibacterial agent and can be applied on small cuts,wounds to treat infection.
Mouth Ulcers – Gentian violet has been used for treating oral infections,which is common in infants or people having weak immune system
Laboratory Use
Microbiology – It is used in gram staining, to detect the difference between Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.
Cautions
It can cause skin irritation , so it is used with utmost care.
It should not be ingested or applied to more deeper wounds.
