Since October 1, 2022, the only means of payment has been the polymer banknotes of the G-series. Before that, paper notes were gradually withdrawn from circulation, starting with small 5 and 10 pounds in 2016. The population and foreigners had enough time to spend or deposit the remaining funds. Today, exchanging old pounds sterling is difficult. They cannot be taken to an exchange office in another country. To get polymer money instead of paper, you will have to go to the Bank of England. This option is not suitable for everyone, especially if the amount is small. Because of this, a lot of GBR is still left on hand.
A little about the pound sterling: history and update of banknotes
The name of this monetary unit dates back to the 18th century. It meant the weight of one pound of silver of a certain fineness. But today they have moved away from pegging the currency to this metal. However, the name has been preserved.
The first printed money appeared in the middle of the 19th century. In essence, they resembled a check, a receipt, which the buyer wrote out to the seller as a guarantee of payment. And already in 1928, the printing of banknotes began, which were more like a banknote. Portraits of monarchs were applied to them, and a little later, the first security elements began to be used.
With each new series, old pounds sterling were withdrawn from circulation. A fairly long period was given for exchange. The recent transition to polymer banknotes was another in the history of GBR.
What is special about polymer English pounds
Until 2016, only paper signs were printed. But over time, they wore out, got dirty and, in general, deteriorated. The National Bank carried out calculations that showed that polymer banknotes have a number of advantages over paper ones:
have a service life 2.5 times longer than paper counterparts;
they have more security elements added to determine authenticity;
it is unprofitable to counterfeit such banknotes, which reduces the number of counterfeits.
Thus, it was decided to withdraw the old-style pound sterling and introduce polymers in their place.
