Endometriosis is a painful gynecological condition that affects 6% to 10% of women worldwide. It occurs when endometrial implants grow outside the uterus and prepare the womb lining for ovulation. The condition can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvium, and lymph nodes, which normally expel during menstruation but enlarge and cause physical symptoms like pain and interference with body activities.
There are four stages to this condition:
1. Symptoms and signs include excruciating pelvic pain, often associated with menstruation.
2. Period pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, occurs when menstrual blood starts returning to the pelvic cavity through the fallopian tubes instead of exiting the body through the vagina.
3. Intercourse-related pain occurs during or after sexual activity, heavy menstrual cycles, or intermenstrual bleeding.
4. Infertility may occur in women undergoing therapy for infertility.
