What to Expect During Your Ankle Fracture Surgery?

Ankle fracture surgery is performed to stabilize and realign broken bones in the ankle using metal plates, screws, or rods. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Before Surgery
1. Medical Evaluation – Your doctor will assess the fracture with X-rays or CT scans to determine the best surgical approach.
2. Fasting – You’ll need to fast for about 6–8 hours before surgery if general anesthesia is used.
3. Anesthesia – The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia (spinal or nerve block).
4. Preoperative Instructions – Your doctor may advise stopping certain medications (like blood thinners) before surgery.

During Surgery
1. Incision – The surgeon makes an incision over the fractured area.
2. Bone Realignment – The broken bone fragments are repositioned into their correct place.
3. Fixation – Metal screws, plates, or rods are used to hold the bones in place while they heal.
4. Closure – The incision is stitched up, and a splint or cast is applied for stabilization.

Healing typically takes 6–12 weeks, depending on the severity of the fracture. Full recovery may take several months with proper rehabilitation.
