What is PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)? PEP is a short-term treatment with antiretroviral medications to prevent HIV infection after a possible exposure to the virus. It is an emergency prevention measure, When is PEP used? PEP is recommended if: • You had unprotected sex with someone who is HIV-positive or whose HIV status is unknown. • You shared needles or syringes. • You had a needlestick injury (common in healthcare settings). • You experienced sexual assault. Important: PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) after exposure. The sooner, the better—starting within a few hours gives the best protection.
