Ankle Ligament Tear: When Can I Return to Sports

Returning to sports after an ankle ligament tear depends on the severity of the tear, type of treatment received, and your recovery progress. Here's a general guideline to help you understand what to expect.

Types of Ankle Ligament Tears & Recovery Time
1. Grade 1 (Mild Sprain) - Ligament stretched or slightly torn, Return to sports: 1–3 weeks.
2. Grade 2 (Moderate Tear) - Partial tear, noticeable swelling and instability, Return to sports: 3–6 weeks.
3. Grade 3 (Severe Tear/Complete Rupture) - Complete ligament tear, significant instability, Return to sports: 8–12 weeks (sometimes longer, especially if surgery is required).

Don’t rush your return. Going back too soon increases the risk of re-injury or chronic ankle instability.
