An IV cannula (sometimes referred to as an IV catheter or intravenous cannula) is a flexible, small tube inserted into the vein in a patient. The idea is to enable direct access to the blood so as to infuse fluids, blood products, or drug medications directly into it. The insertion of an IV cannula is known as IV cannulation. It can typically be provided in hospital wards and in the emergency rooms, or even at the individual's home for the purpose of therapy. When inserted, a cannula is left in the vein for a particular duration in order to allow continuous or intermittent infusion.
