Recovery from bunion surgery can vary depending on the severity of the bunion, the type of surgery performed, and your overall health. However, here’s a general timeline and what you can expect during bunion surgery recovery.
1. Immediately After Surgery (First Week) Pain & Swelling: Expect some pain, bruising, and swelling. Pain is usually managed with medication. Rest & Elevation: Rest with your foot elevated above heart level to reduce swelling. Mobility: You may be instructed to use crutches, a walker, or a special surgical shoe to avoid putting weight on the foot. 2. 2 to 6 Weeks Post-Surgery Bandages & Sutures: Bandages are typically changed regularly. Sutures may be removed around 2 weeks post-op. No Full Weight-Bearing: You’ll likely still avoid putting full weight on the foot. Follow-up Visits: X-rays may be taken to check healing progress. Mild Activities: Gentle movements and limited walking (with support) may be allowed. 3. 3 to 6 Months Improved Mobility: You’ll likely be able to resume most normal daily activities. Swelling Reduction: Swelling will continue to subside but may persist slightly, especially after long days. Shoes: Avoid high heels or narrow shoes. 5. Full Recovery (6 to 12 Months) Complete Healing: It may take up to a year for full internal healing and for swelling to completely disappear. Permanent Results: With proper care, results are typically long-lasting.
