Mohs micrographic surgery is the most precise way of removing skin cancer and typically reduces postsurgical scarring. Unlike conventional dermatologic surgery, the Mohs procedure removes skin cancer in stages. During the first stage, our dermatologist removes only the visible tumor. This minimizes the loss of normal tissue. We place a gauze bandage on the wound and the patient waits while the dermatologist examines the tumor under a microscope. If we find evidence that some of the tumor remains, we bring the patient back to the exam room where we remove more tissue.
