In the year 2022–23, Australia reportedly welcomed over 730,000 immigrants. Of this large influx, approximately one-third chose to settle permanently in the country. This marks a significant rise in migration numbers, reflecting growing global interest in relocating to Australia. However, despite this trend, the Australian government’s current policies and infrastructure do not support granting permanent residency to such a high number of individuals. While many migrants arrive with the hope of making Australia their long-term home, the reality is that the government has set clear limitations on how many people can be granted permanent residency each year. These constraints are based on economic, social, and infrastructural considerations. As a result, a considerable portion of migrants may face challenges in transitioning from temporary to permanent status. The gap between migration levels and available permanent visas raises concerns about future planning, resource allocation, and the overall sustainability of Australia’s immigration system.
