Hyper-Arousal: The Physical Side of PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects both the mind and body, and one of its most noticeable symptoms is hyper-arousal. This state of heightened alertness is the body’s way of staying prepared for danger—even when no real threat is present. For those living with PTSD, hyper-arousal can feel exhausting, overwhelming, and difficult to control.

Physically, hyper-arousal may include an increased heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, tense muscles, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms mirror the body’s natural “fight-or-flight” response, but in PTSD, this reaction becomes constant and persistent. As a result, individuals may feel restless, irritable, easily startled, or unable to relax in everyday situations.
