Editor's Comments

Barry Scott -Digest Editor

What is the Forecast for the 2009 economy? Some analysts are projecting the US economy to be moving sideways for the first half of the year with some growth in the second half. The Canadian economy is looking at a slight drop through the first half of 2009 although the good news is the inflationary rate will remain low and stable. The European economy does not look to rebound until the early months of 2010, but this is an overall projection for the European Union as a whole with some of the countries recovering earlier than others.

What is the impact on me? For the most part, I see the economy on a much smaller scale than all of the experts and forecasters as the overall effect to me is as one would expect is on a smaller scale as well. Each entrepreneur, small and large business owner and most importantly consumers could also look at this on this same small scale. When we follow the forecasts for the big picture there is a tendency to over react to this type of news. Now I am not advising to go on a spending spree, however tightening the money belt a little too much does have an effect to extend these inevitable periodic downturns in the economy. I believe using caution, while maintaining as close to normal business procedures as possible and avoiding the panic of what is happening on a larger scale will help turn things around in a more timely fashion.

Send me an email and let me know how you would review the year of 2008, good or bad, started great, started bad, ended great, ended bad, you get the point. I would like to post some of the reviews in the year end Adland Digest. Send me an email with your take on 2008: barry@softfornet.com

How to Encourage e-Shoppers to Trust Your Web Site

By Samuel Alatorre

It is amazing how the internet has changed the way people do business. Ecommerce has become a multi-billion dollar industry. However, as the internet becomes more important to consumers' lives, we see more fraudulent acts. This has raised consumer concerns for issues like identity theft and phishing. Website business owners may be exploring ways to encourage shoppers to build trust and enhance their shopping experience on the web. One venue is the authentication technology, the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificate that has increased web visitor's confidence to many legitimate sites. A further security development is now available for serious ecommerce web site owners, the Extended Validation SSL. This new technology enables the address bar in high security browsers to turn green, thus allowing consumers to feel secure that they are on a legitimate web site. When customers see their browser's address bar change to green, they are being assured they can do business with this vendor. EV SSL's vetting process is more extensive than any other type of security certificate. The process includes verifying the organization's identity, the validity of the request and the overall legitimacy of the business.

Extended Validation SSL Certificates can help increase consumer confidence in your ecommerce web site. This solution is a giant step forward to restoring consumer confidence online. As fraudulent, fake websites emerge, fooling consumers, shoppers distrust has grown and many decide to not purchase online at all. Web users need help distinguishing legitimate sites from crafty sites.

The Certification Authority Browser Forum cabforum.org has set guidelines on how EV should be placed and issues certificates to browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 and Fire Fox 3. The EV browser blend enhances the user experience by turning the address bar to a favorable color. The Green bar in the address bar and a lock icon popup security confirms a secure site. This empowers shoppers to do business in a secure environment. The EV technology addresses the security concerns ecommerce has raised. For site owners, this technology potentially will increase transactions on the site by providing secure customer experience and building trust. To site visitors, EV can boost confidence while doing transactions on line.
Before buying an EV SSL Certificate, it is advised to visit http://www.evsslguide.com/ for a full information guide.

Starting a Online Business - The Mindset You Must Possess

By Brian Nelson

You've played it out in your head, you've weighed all the options, and you have decided to start your own online business. However, you might be forgetting the most important thing, which is having the right mindset for starting an online business.

There are many reasons for wanting to start an online business. Maybe you don't like your hourly job, or maybe you just want to spend more time with your family. Perhaps you have read success stories of how people have made a lot of money online, and you want to give it a try. These are all very good reasons, but if you don't have the right mindset starting out, you will fail. Anyone who has worked in sales knows that in order to be successful, you must be able to accept rejection. Not everyone will want what you have to offer, and you must accept that. However, if one person out of ten buys what you are selling, you will be a very successful sales person.

Many mistakes I have seen young sales people make, are that they get too hung up on one failure, and thus miss the opportunity that is staring them in the face. It's the same for an online business. You will run into problems, and you may be tempted to just say "the heck with this" and give up. What you need to do, is work through the problems, try a different angle, and find something that works.

Another common mistake I have seen is people trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. Here is a good rule of thumb. If you are trying something that is just not working, find out what the problem is, and change it. This could mean a complete overhaul of you business, or it could be just a minor detail you need to change. Either way, if you start an online business, don't give up, don't keep doing the same thing, just identify the problem and adjust it.

A good idea before starting any online business is to seek out others that are doing what you wanting to do, and ask them questions. If you are new at something, it's always best to first talk to people who have done it. They can give you good advice to get started, and they will offer encouragement. By talking with people who are practicing in your desired field, you will find that by knowing that they are successful, it is possible for you to be successful. You can find online communities on just about any subject by searching out message boards and blogs.

If you think you can just put up a website, and sit back and start collecting money, then you are wrong. Running an online business takes work, just like any other job. You might not have to invest money to get started, but you definitely need to invest your time or your business will fail.

After reading this, you might be asking yourself "is it worth it?" The answer is, yes it is. When you work diligently for someone else, you are making money for that company or person, but when you work for yourself, you are making money for no one else but yourself. I'm not going to guarantee you are going to be an internet millionaire, but how many millionaires have you seen who are employed by someone else?
