HIV's early warning signs and symptoms

At the beginning of an HIV infection, some persons have flu-like symptoms. Early HIV symptoms appear in infected people within 2-4 weeks and can persist anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Acute HIV infection refers to the early stages of the infection.

Early signs of HIV infection (acute HIV) include:

⦁ Fever
⦁ Headache
⦁ Muscle aches and pains in the joints
⦁ Rashes on the skin
⦁ Throat irritation
⦁ Sores in the mouth that hurt
⦁ Lymph nodes or glands enlarged, particularly in the neck
⦁ Diarrhea
⦁ Loss of weight
⦁ Cough
⦁ Chills
⦁ Sweats at night
⦁ Ulcers in the mouth

It's important to remember that such early symptoms can be caused by a variety of illnesses, not simply HIV. In other words, just because you're having these symptoms doesn't guarantee you have HIV—which is why STI testing and meeting with your healthcare physician can be beneficial next steps.
